I need a new middle chainring to go on to my deore 590 chainset. Will any 4 bolt chainring do the job or does it need to be an exact replacement? Pls help.

It needs to be a 4-bolt compact made for HTII or you will be busy with a file.
BCD is 104mm, but get the smaller diameter platform for HTII.
Do not buy a composite ring (SLX, XT or XTR) as these only fit those cranks without grinding, and I do not recommend that.

Shimano steel replacement will be perfect.

Middleburn are good (but expensive), and get the right (HTII) one.

That's great PaulD, so as long as its compatible with a HT11 crankset it should be ok.

Is it due to the fact that the bottom bracket gets in the way?

it's only the inner where the BB gets in the way. The old octalink granny rings had larger lugs.

You just want a normal stamped ring like this:

Steel is a bit heavier but will last longer.

If you get one of the composite reinforced rings like on SLX, XT and this years deore then you will need to file a bit off the arms to clear the bulky composite bit.

Either go for a deore or LX ring if going for shimano.
