Just swapped my worn absolute black chainring for a new blackspire one. Noticed it is at least a few mm fatter where it is bolted to the spider (XT M8000). While the bolts that came with the crank engage and seem solid, they can't be as well-threaded as before. Would you be looking for a longer chainring bolt in those circumstances?
Do you know how many threads need to be engaged in a fastener for full strength? Surprisingly few, a rule of thumb is the same as the diameter of the fastener, so a 5mm bolt needs 5mm of thread engaged whilst another rule is three full turns of thread, so if you've got that then you should be ok. Bit of thread lock wouldn't hurt if you've got few threads.
That's useful, thanks. I'll go and check exactly what I've got.
Obviously concerned about my raw power shearing all four simultaneously. ๐
EDIT: Less than three turns...
Found some on an old triple inner ring which are fractionally longer, so now I've got three turns' worth, just about.
At least I'll die with a slightly improved chainline.
