I've adjusted everything. I'm going mad here. Its taken out two spokes on a climb. What am I doing wrong?!

Its fine. Then as soon as you put some torque into the pedals- it skips straight over. help!

So work the links up and down individually? Last night I swapped back to a XTR mech that Ive used for 9yrs and taken a 1 month old one off with a new outer/inner. It can't be a bent hanger can it?

Seeing as nothing else has been changed or altered except the mech It's got to be either the H scew setting on the mech or there's the mech tentioner at the rear which positions the top jockey wheel closer or further away to the cassette. The further away from the mech the top wheel is the higher the chain tension and the more chance of misalignment. You will need to set it so it just enough room to transfer to the top sprocket of the cassette without fouling the chain.

back pedal and a stiff link will "jump" through the mech.

Might be a bent hanger, but limit screw should wort it IMO

Sorry, sounds like you haven't adjusted the limit screws properly, should be nigh on impossible for the chain to skip into the spokes with the mech guiding it properly (or get a spoke protector, or go singlespeed).

How old is the cassette (although I can't see that making a huge difference)?

Ok, before resetting everything I also decided to trimmed back the outer as it was 'abit' long and the steel thread inside the the outer seems to have stretched itself out abit - say 5mm each end under the outer end cap. Yesterday I had cut the outer flush at the end. Never experienced that before?!

Hora,

That would have had little or no effect on the over shift issue, it may a little impact on changing up / down gears.

Old Sheldon will help on this, you'll probably need some alcohol to help through this ectensive guide mind!

Right. My old mech (circa 2001) has an adjustor gromit just before it goes into the guide tunnel and then the pinch-plate. I set the chain so it was one down from top by using the front winder-gromit then gradually adjusted the rear to pop up to the top. Sorry guys and thanks for your help with my brain fade. Hopefully this has cured it. Will take round the block later and if it skips then its a new cassette and front rings (gulp).

Ive also cut off the two offending spokes. Erm, will buy a spoke tensoner-tool tomorrow. Never replaced any before! Knowing me the spokes might be a while

Will save that link (ta).

Thanks again guys ๐Ÿ˜€

the chain has worked out whose bike it's been fitted to and is trying to top itself.
