Need 9 speed 11-34, have always bought XT but they're £54 at Chain Reaction (convinced they have gone up in the last year?).
Know anywhere I get it cheaper or is there a cheaper, lighter (than 256g) SRAM option?
you're not wrong about the price increase - have you been away somewhere?!
anyways, these days that's a decent price for XT, sadly 🙁
XT are cheaper at Merlin - there was some links to somewhere even cheaper a week or two ago, can't remember where sorry.
I got a PG 980 but it's a bit heavier I think.
Merlin have XT cassettes for £46 and SRAM PG990 for £47.50. Any consensus on which is best?
actually, that's a point - i got one from merlin a few weeks ago for £45, which is an even better price. i'd get one of them.
FYI: Shimano XT 11/34 weigh about 300g - it's the 11/32 that weigh about 250g.
ribble have got 11-34 for 43.90 (last day today I think)
Evans were doing oem xt for 34 quid, don't know if they still have stock.
PG-990 has a pretty red spider and lock ring. Does that help you choose?
-EDIT- Absolute Cycles on Ebay £46.95 (free p&p)
I never get why folk buy anything but basic cassettes unless their bikes are super light, or they have alloy freehubs.

Cos it's a relatively cheap way of saving 100g of rotating weight?
It rotates, but the benefit is nothing like as much as the tyre - it might as well not be rotating.
Surely there are cheaper ways of saving 100gm, particularly when you are replacing the cassette every year or so (OK I guess many folk replace their Thomson stems, carbon bars etc or even bikes as often LMAO)
or they have alloy freehubs.
Choosing XT over old LX saved about 150grams, and I picked an XT cassette for £32 a few months ago. How much would it cost to save 150grams of weight from, say, your handlebars or seatpost? Admittedly, with the price rises now I don't think I would bother though...
"Surely there are cheaper ways of saving 100gm, particularly when you are replacing the cassette every year or so"
XT costs about £15 more than SLX, and my cassettes last a lot longer than one year. Maybe if I lived in the peak district I would feel differently.
I find cutting down on beers for a week can more than save 150g. And it saves me money 😉
I don't want to lose weight.

I'd rather drink the beer.
Cheaper cassettes are better for alloy freehubs because they tend to be fully attached to a holder, therefore no point force from a single cog to damage the freehub.
Anyway, re@ cassette, I prefer sram ones but honestly that's not a functional preference, just like avoiding shimmy! I've noticed no durability or performance differences between the two.

Well my cheap Shimano cassette didn't have any holder, just steel rings which bit nastily into the freehub - the PG 980 has an alloy spider thingy.

Nope I was aware of the increase of raw materials causing £1500 bikes to increase by £100 or so but last year I'm sure I paid around £30 for an XT cassette and now they're £54. That's an 80% increase!
Thanks for all the advice 😀
yeah tell me about it - the SRP is much more than that as well 🙁
