I'm just in the process of choosing the build spec for my new SC Tallboy LTC and shifting has changed since I last looked at components. My riding is mostly trail based with the occasional weekend epic thrown in as standard. Having run 3x9 for as long as I can remember I need bringing up to speed with x10 advantages/disadvantages and which would be the better option for my requirements. I do like the sound of 2x10 but is it possible to find the correct balance of xc climbing and downhill speed?

Easy all ๐Ÿ™‚

If you were riding 26" wheels before and using your granny a lot you might find 2 * 10 hard going on hilly epics on a 29er, downhill speed will not be an issue.

Tbh I rarely used my granny ring. But it did get used on the odd occasion. ๐Ÿ˜•

Going with a 26/38 2x10 set up.

Next thing is Shimano dynasis 9 speed compatibility. I have read that it will still be possible to stick with my M970 chainset (with 10 speed rings) and update everything else? Would definately save me a buck or two... Not a massive fan of the new futuristic looking chainset tbh.

Has anybody opted for a similar setup?
