New build drive chain options

Just purchased a Specialized chisel fs frame. I purchased a full SLZ 12 speed drive chain with a view to buying some Silt wheels. Silt have sold out of the microspline wheels, so options:

1. buy hyper glide silt wheels (very good price), get an 11-51.  11speed cassette and fit the 12 speed system. I believe this will work but you get a phantom double shift at the end of the cassette. Is it just a case of setting the limit screws, b tension and off you go ? Will use an 11speed chain.

2. return the shifter and derailleur and buy an 11 speed set up.

3. Look at alternatives wheel wise?

Half price roval control alloy at tredz would be a good match for that frame. https://www.tredz.co.uk/roval

But you'd need to swap the driver for MS or just buy an XD cassette.

Pics when you've built it please. I'm quite tempted by one of these frames. Did you get any discount on it?

Yes, I paid £1260 for the electric pink frame. Going to build with a SID, 4 pot brakes. Should come in around £2.100 all in.

Rear mech will work with an 11sp shimano shifter, if you just replaced that. I'd recommend XT.

But I'd consider a custom wheel build with DT Swiss XM421 rims (maybe XM481 front) instead.

you can get non-microspline 12 speed cassettes, just use one of those? Sunace and a few others do them - I think the low-end sram stuff would also work for the cassette

The HG 12speed Shimano cassettes don’t go past 11/46, I want 11/51 really. Anyone just rigged and 11speed cassette to a 12 speed setup ? I believe it works fine. The sun race cassettes are a fair bit more in price than Shimano currently

I've not tried running a 12 speed shifter with an 11 speed cassette. While the rear mech would be fine, I'm not sure the shifter would be. There was an xtr shifter that could switch between 11 and 12 but it needed a specific 11 speed cassette as I remember.

Happy for this to be a school day, but that was my understanding.

Why the obsession with Silt wheels?

Are you building up for xc or light trail?

Well they are half price and light for XC, can get front and rear for £175, roughly 1700gms…. Bargain

They are only a bargain if they are the right thing. The rest of the build sounds nice, i'd not run a compromised drivetrain for cheaper wheels personally.

Is there a budget in place for the whole project or just trying to keep a lid on the total spend?

Is there a reason Sunrace 11/51 cassettes aren't an option? They are pretty decent.

No, will certainly have a look into the sun race cassette this evening, good shout, I like the look of the silt, but happy to check other recommendations.

That's a good price for the Silt wheels, I've found Sunrace cassettes to be pretty decent.

Have them on all my MTBs at the mo.

Ah, that’s super cheap I’ll give you that. Just check the weights of any 12 speed 11-50/51 cassettes to make sure they’re not going to offset the reasonable wheel weight you quoted.

The 11 speed bodge doesn’t sound great though tbh.

Silt seem to be out of stock of pretty much everything (and for a fairly long time too) - must be a reason.....

I'm pretty sure you can't use the 12 speed shifter with 11 speed cassette due to the pull ratio.

Either get other wheels or the sunrace HG 12 speed cassette.

Do they have xd driver versions in stock? I run full xt but with xd as a preference as xd cassettes tend to be lighter than ms...

They are lighter yes but you don't get the shift quality of Shimano. Also for the sake of 1-200g I'd rather pay xt prices than SRAM. Put that money into the wheel set and get something 1400-1500g instead as the weight saved out on the rim will give way more benefit than the same on the cassette.

I'm actually running an e*13 cassette /SRAM chain combo (everything else XT) and think the shifting is good. Plenty of XD cassette options out there that aren't SRAM.

Silt only seem to have the XC rear and AM front wheels cheap BTW?

I know this because I have just ordered one of the front ones.

Yes, I bought the Silt XC rear and AM front for £175. The wheels come with Hyperglide hubs, I went for an 11-50 12 speed Twenty21 hyperglide cassette which will fit on the 11 speed HG hub. The Twenty21 cassette has a claimed weight of 610gms, so not super light, but equally the Shimano 11 speed cassettes are coming in around 580gms. The wheel set is likely to me more like 1800-1900gms, so very happy with the price for those. Got the Chisel frame delivered yesterday, true beauty in the electric pink. Shop around as some shops are discounting them.

Planned build:

- Chisel FS

- SID 120mm

-SLX 175mm - 30t crank

-SLX shifters & derailleur

-Twenty21 - 11/50 cassette

-Brand X 170mm dropper

-SILT xc rear wheel, AM front wheel

-Gemini 4 pot 180mm brakes rear/front

-780mm/35mm rise bar

-50mm stem

- Tyres - Not sure yet, might go 2.3 Nobby Nic rear and 2.25 front, or something faster.
