Hey Guys,
I'm looking to replace the standard bars on my 2008 Kona Cindercone, they are a bit thin looking and this is causing me a couple of issues.

1) I am having to wrap the bars with tape so my light clamp doesn't get all loose.

2) I saw a guy snap his bars and eat a load of floor a while back, am a little concerned :S

I have been looking at Azonic Carbon bars, but am unsure as to the advantage of riser bars over flat and how much rise to get??

Anyone got any advice they could give?

Thanks

T

If you want thicker or oversize bars then you will need a new stem as well, bars are quite a personal thing, I quite like the Bontrager ones, go some King Earls but the Rhythm ones look pretty nice.

Riser bars-comfort, easy riding easy on the body?

Flat-fast sporty steering.

I ride hard and fast (as I can tortoisely can) but use risers.

If I was racing xc sponsership deal I'd be riding flat.

Try something new? see how you get on and go from there.

I like low-rise (0.5-1") risers. All the sweep and width without the bars round your ears feeling. I think they look neater too.

Oversize alloy would be good if you're worried about snapping them but you'll need a new stem.

On another point I would not spend £100 on carbon bars on a sub £1000 hardtail (assuming that's what the CinderCone still is) it's not worth it.

Get some £30-£40 branded risers (+ matching stem for similar money) - I like the shape of Easton bars but it's a personal thing what suits you.

flat vs riser it's really down to personal preference,
i spent a long time riding with different length stems and flat/riser bars to find a comfortable setup,
it's whatever works for you/feels best.

if you can borrow some bars and see how it feels that would be best,
it might save you from buyinga an expensive carbon mistake.

nothing wrong with shimming out a light mount! you sure u got the right mount size, not 31.8mm oversize????
this shouldnt influence your bar choice!

Cheers, this has cleared up a few queries.
Gonna have a look at some different bars and try a few out see how they feel. See if a can borrow some bars of a few mates to try them out.

i'll let you know how i get on!

i have a raceface dues xc flatbar available for sale if you fancy it,
i think 23in uncut width, 31.8mm clamp,
very light at 145g lighter than a lot of carbon bars

same as this,
http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/Product/0/deus_xc_flat_bar/racefacedeusxcflatbar.html
has a slight mark on one of the transfers/logo,
never crashed!

£23 posted ???
drop me a line if your interested,
have a giant A5 oversize stem, 110mm length for £5 aswell. this is actually quite light with 4 bolt clamp.
