I bought a new bike the other day! nother Carrera Subway, priced £390 from Halfords, but it will get me to work and back (5 days a week, average 65 miles per week, year round). Haven't taken a photo yet, nor set it up. Need to adjust handlebars/headset, maybe swap seatpost for a non-laidback post.

I didn't get the all-weather version because I read a review that the mudguards weren't the best, I wasn't bothered by heated grips either, and already have high power lights. Now I partially regret it because the newer regular non-all-weather version doesn't have mudguard+pannier eyelets on the seatstays, only eyelets down by the dropout.

I was browsing rear racks online and saw you can get them which fit to the dropouts and come with an extra-long QR skewer. How do these fittings fair off-road with a bit of abuse, small ~30cm drops for example, regular bumpy terrain?

The wheels are 27.5" so I need new mudguards. Can't decide what to get, on my 26" commuter I have wide Chromoplastics which are good for a 2.1" tyre (on the front, 2.1" won't fit rear). Not sure about going that wide on this one.  The Chromoplastics I bought years ago. Any recommendations, from experience, as I'm struggling to make my mind up!

You can use the one eyelet at the drop out for guards and rack.

... and p clips or a specific seatpost clamp for the upper mounts.

Not used a rear rack that fits the skewer but my front one is grand. It's the same diameter as the 5mm bolts for your conventional rack ...

Subways have always looked great value as basic commuters, and ripe for upgrading. I quite fancy the idea of the heated grips on the all weather version!

Oh.. a while after I made the statement about only having eyelets near the rear drop-out, it does have the eyelets at the top of the seatstays for the rack. What I meant was, the old 26" subway I have has a third set on the chainstay, just a bit above brake height, on the inside (ie facing inwards) of seatstays.

It did briefly occur to me to use the same eyelets for rack & mudguard stays, but then forgot about it when posting.

The rack on the old 26" I bodged to fit past the brake by gentle bending and those semi-circular spacers from (Avid) brake mounts - not sure there'll be enough clearance for mudguards due to the slightly larger wheels.

First commute this morning. Rear rack from old bike. Happy with it although first time ever using a double up front, being used to a triple I'm not sure which ring to use and the jump is bigger.  Rides nice, was fun to blast, despite being an xl frame. Lowered stem by a couple of spacers. Full coverage Mpart mudguards ordered.
