A funny thing just happened to me on this morning's mountain bike ride with my 12yo, heading up Cut Gate.
We parked at Langsett Barn and rode the normal way towards Flouch and then down and up towards CG. I'd had a good breakfast - big bowl of porridge with golden syrup. Couple of mugs of tea. Not had a drink in the last few days. I have had a pretty rough cold though but was shaking it off yesterday but felt ok this morning. Started at -1 deg.
Wrapped up warm, good layering, decent gloves, 2x snoods, face/mouth covered. Felt perfectly fine. Anyway, started out well - despite the cold fingers and toes - and rode fine. Managed about 3/4 of the rocky climb out of the bottom from the bridge, but then riding into the sun just past the woods, it's almost as if my own battery went totally flat in an instant. Dizziness, overwhelming tiredness and a need to just sit down or even lie down on the side of the trail came over me. And I had to.
We opened up the hot chocolate a had two mugs and I had some water. Took me a good five minutes of repeated attempts to get up - sit back down again, lie down a couple of times, before I could get up and ride back to the car. I rode down the rocky bit steady but fine, and then felt perfectly ok all the way back to the car.
Anyway, looks like I've just tried to get riding too soon.
Dr ChatGPT tells me it was "classic presyncope" and gave the following advice..
"You almost certainly experienced a transient presyncopal episode caused by post-viral vulnerability combined with cold exposure, exertion, and relative dehydration, possibly compounded by a glucose dip. It felt dramatic, but the rapid, complete recovery is reassuring."
Long and short of it is "take care of yourselves, folks."
yeah. too much after illness is a thing. steady away. hope you're feeling better soon.
I've felt really lazy and guilty about wasting the last few days off work but I've had tonsillitis and lingering cold symptoms. I knew I'd make it worse by going out in the cold. Been there, done that.
I'll wait for next weekend.
Been feeling crap over the whole of the Christmas period. Managed two rides only. Was hoping I'd feel better today as the weather looked gorgeous. Instead went back to sleep until 4pm ๐
No doubt I'll be absolutely fine tomorrow, when I return to work 😡
First ride today after a week on holiday with a stinking cold. A pretty flat 10 miles on the gravel bike at 9mph. Came back feeling no worse, which was the aim.
Probably will be 100% to go back to work tomorrow. ****ing hell.
Dodged it all the way through December then it finally got it new years day, struggled on that ride and felt worse since tbh. Skipped the usual sunday ride and done bugger all instead tbh 👎ย
Yep I've had it too, daughter had a chest infection and now I've caught her cough and a cold too. I did a half hour on the rollers yesterday which was a bad idea, I almost fell off them at the end and felt awful the rest of the evening! Was going to go for a longer ride today but glad I stayed local as again I'm feeling completely drained. 6am start to get to work tomorrow too, yay.
I just felt 'Meh' over the whole 2 weeks, and as a result only got out for 2 short rides. Sunday was the most annoying, temperatures plummeted, poor sleep the night before feeling coldy and grumpy at the lack of riding. the boss was trying to push me out the door, but I just knew I'd make myself worse if I went out for a ride the day before returning to work...ย
Sometimes you do just have to accept recovery actually requires rest.ย
Well up for a ride this coming weekend though, and feeling more like I'll be up to it having given myself the time to bounce back.ย
The rest of my family are all dealing with prolonged colds it seems, while I'm pretty much back to normal (just feeling tubby and lazy)...ย
Loads going around Pook. I've been ill all christmas - 2 weeks solid of flu type things. I got out riding a bit thinking the fresh air would do me good and it felt ok but only when I got home did I go all shivery and cold.ย
