I like it when people describe their bike in terms of the amount of travel it has.
Why?
Because I can't help imagining that they're talking about the frame size and that there's loads of people riding gnarly trails on teeny bikes.
Anyone else do this or simlar?
No.
Anyone else do this
Now I do.

Cuh. Some people have no imagination.
How about imagining what it would look like if your bike really did have 140mm forks?
i think that terms like trail bike are so wide ranging (eg rigid to 7 inch sus travel) that people want to qualify it a bit more. Its a bit more usable to use sus travel than give a full geometry spec sheet (which might be more acurate in determining where in the spectum of trail bikes it really sits)

"trail" bike is just a buzz word.
It's just trendy way of saying you have a bike that rides a bit of everything.
It really annoys me that people equate travel to a particular use.
A bike goes where you tell it.
TBH 'trail bike' kind of makes sense and isn't too offensive.
'All mountain' on the other hand.....
some people may have a 4", 5", 6" and 8" collection though....
