just bought some shimano deore brakes for my hardtail bike.... whats the procedure for new brakes,,,..do they need bleeding straight away cos the back brake doesnt seem to grip much at all, but front brake grips a little'...or is it that they need 'bedding in' for a while... the local bike shop put them on... i dont no much about these brakes myself..lol

You need to go and be these brakes in. Everyone has their own way but I find a hill get a lick of speed on then jam the brakes on until you stop. Repeat until you find the brakes lock up.

If it's a pre-bled system they shouldn't need bleeding. My guess is that the pads just need bedding in. Find somewhere safe to ride and 10-20 hard stops from a good speed should do the trick or, as Captain Pugwash says, drag the brakes down a hill run.

If the rear brake is still noticably less powerful than the front or the lever is squishy, it might need a bleed.

-- Edit --
The new Deore 595s are pretty good brakes, I've just upgrade my old LX M585s with M595 calipers

Supposedly pre-bled from the factory, but always bleed them before they go out of the workshop, it's surprising/disturbing how much air is usually in there.
