I'm looking for a set of wheels to go on a Trek Rail to replace the OEM Bontrager wheels.

What's a decent wheelset with a budget up to around £500 max?

Hope do the Fortus 30/Pro 5e rear in 27.5. Paired with the 29" front you'd be looking at around £470.

There's the DT Swiss HX1700 wheelset too, and Mavic also offer the E-Deemax as a 29/27.5 wheelset. Not sure if either are any good, but both are under £500.

I'm sure Hunt will have something.

DT 370 hubs, 1960g and lifetime warranty on the rims for <£500:

Might be better with the 30 HD rim but I've not seen those at similar price. But lifetime warranty...

Interesting. I was just looking at Reserve wheels and as you say, they seem to recommend the 30 HD for e-bike use. Not really sure what the difference is but I'll take a look.

Reserve have the 30 HD with the DT350 hub and the older 90t freehub rather then the fancy Degree of Freedom ones for £519 which seems a good deal.

I have this set up on my 28kg 180mm Kenevo and it's been bombproof

Fairly sure the MX set of those is out of stock at Reserve when you select the correct options - not that I've been looking...

It's a shame they don't keep the same price as the 27.5 set when you select mullet option on these. They do have mullet set with i9 Hydra hubs for £880 but that's way over your budget and I believe Hydra axles can be a bit snappy. I'm happy with the cheaper i9 1/1 hubs I have though.

You're correct, they're out of stock. I must have misread the page when I was browsing.

2 sets of Mavic E-DeeMax here, also faultless. Tubeless is beyond easy, ratchet hubs and the rims seem to be made from undentium... Great wheels IMHO.

Can recommend this (online) place  -

Russell Crowe (not that one), gives great advice on wheels. Can build to your spec. My son (not an ebiker) but a regular smasher of wheels had a set of DT FR541 on Hope built, we checked them for the first time since he bought them months ago and only 2 spokes had come slightly loose

I got a HX531 on Hope from them.
