Hi all,

My Dad wants a new bike. His last "mtb" is 20 odd years old. Is it possible to get something decent for £300? Something from Decathlon? Maybe. I'm trying to convince him to spent £500 and get something reasonably decent.

Any thoughts?

If you are confident at checking out second hand bikes, this may be the way to go.

Some half decent bikes in the CRC sale, 50% off. There's Paul's cycles too. Should get something decent for 300 quid, obviiously even more decent for 500. Suppose it depends how much he's going to use it if it's worth going for a 500 quid one.

Actually, the decent bikes at CRC seem to have gone.

Indeed, this looks pretty good for £300

Personnally, I don't think its worth going from £300 to £500. A decent fork will make a big difference and the jump up to £500 won't get you that much better a fork. The gears and brakes might be marginally better but they won't improve the ride that much. Its much more worth going to £700 - £800 - where you start getting decent Rockshox forks etc. Even then, I'd probably have £300 worth of new bike and then plug in a second hand RS Reba or Recon for another £100 or so?

Will your dad really need much more than a serviceable £300 bike? How much is he going to ride it, and where?

Is he planning to use it much offroad or just as a general purpose bike?

For that money I'd be looking at something from EBC's own brand, Revolution. Probably something with a rigid fork.

Would one of these fit the bill?

Dad deserves a better bike than £300. My bike is better than my son's Neh neh.

Specialized Hardrock.
Dads love these as they tend to have bad backs and like the upright riding position
Got my Dad one 5 years second hand off ebay ago and he has ridden it into the ground - iv just had to change some parts for him

Thanks for the feedback. Some good suggestions.

I think I'm going to see what he actually wants to use it for... Good call on the EBC options.

He'd be hard pushed to get a better bike than mine. 😉

You must have something like a Yeti SB66 then.

We've got a shop round here that gets handicapped people to refurbish donated bikes. http://www.spokes-uk.org/
A lot of them are supermarket specials to begin with, but they do get the occasional decent bike.
Is there anything like that near you ?

Your dad does not need a new bike.

Just get that 20 year old 'retro classic' out, give it a clean, a service, some new cables and tyres and he'll be ready to go.

Is it very obvious that I ride retro's?

Go on, you can tell me.
