Bit of a numpty question but can anyone tell me if I can use a MTB shifter with a road derailleur (both Shimano). I'm wondering if the indexing is different?

Cassette's seem to have the same spacings, so I would say yes, someone will prob be along soon to disprove this though

Yep you can use a road rear mech with mtb shifters but if you have a road front mech you need a compatible shifter as the spacing is different.

9 speed is fine with any road mech (including 10 speed).

10 speed MTB is different.
