Just tried to clean one of these. Wet, and rusty, and seized again. Seems the bearing is only sealed on one side.

However, the dimensions required, 51.8x40x8 36°/45° means that I can't find a bearing that's sealed on both sides. Is it me or is that a bloody stupid way to design a bearing that spends its life in the bottom headset cup on a mountain bike!

Thanks FSA, you bunch of incompetent Muppets. Due to it being an oddball headtube size, they've got me over a barrel as well.

Ridiculous tbh. Fulcrum do the same on some of their wheels but at least that makes a little sense, BBs and headsets are completely open to any moisture in teh frame. On BBs and wheels at least you can make a ludicrious claim about reduced bearing drag but a headset?

But FSA headsets are usually decent.

My first carbon frame. With welded tube frames, there were two little holes in the head tube where the down and top tubes met. On this thing, the pivot bolts on the seat tube are hollow and there's a stealth dropper slot all giving easy access into the seat tube. Like Northwind says, it's then all easy internal access to the head tube via both the bottom bracket and the seat cluster.

Might have to drill some drain holes in this new frame.

Is your rant about the bottom bracket bearings not being 2RS or the headset bearings not being 2RS? You start on the bottom bracket moan and you finish with a final paragraph about a headset...

Have you contacted a bearings specialist to ask of they can get a sealed version of the bearing (2RS - means both sides of bearing have a rubber seal)?

Feel free to tell me to GTF, if you already know that and you've tried that...doesn't suggest you have in your post.

The rant is just about the bottom headset bearing. The same bearing seems to come under 4 different names but none of them are actually sealed. The design of the bearing actually makes it look like it would be pretty tricky to achieve as one seal (the one it has) is on the bottom face, the other would be on the inside, rather than top face. Due to the cups, I'm limited to that type of bearing. Due to the frame, I'm pretty much limited to that cup.

Sorry, I don't remember mentioning the bottom bracket but I had made an early start on the eggnog.

Nope, I've not read the original post properly and took it as a bottom bracket - missed the bottom bearing. Now I know it is all about the headset the post makes sense!
