Mardley Heath is the closest bet. It's tiny, but there's some good singletrack in there. You can pretty easily link this to Tewin and onto Sherardswood with barely a tyre on tarmac if you want something longer.

Otherwise, Jedi's not far away at Herts Shore and Woburn and Chicksands are an hour/hour thirty or so off in the car. Thetford's only an hour and a bit away too.

However, I moved 4 years ago, so a lot of that could be wrong by now...

How slow do you drive! it's about 30 mins in the car to Chicksands from Knebworth

+1 for Brown's Mardley Heath bit. Mardley virtually connects to Harmergreen woods which are great, and from there you can go to Tewin, Bramcote, Hertford.

Over Benington and north of Ware also good.

The Ayots have some nice trails too.

A big weekend day riding or a very short drive can take you to Broxbourne woods, absolutely massive area which is fabulous riding.

Basically, there are soooo many good bridleways around there you cant go wrong!

I live about 60 seconds from Mardley Heath and whilst it's perfect for a quick spin, you will get bored quickly. However, pick a direction and you will find woodland and lanes so you can link things up nice and easily. Tell him to pop in and see us at our new shop in Welwyn Garden City when we open in a couple of weeks and we can point him in the right direction.

What Lady Alexmtb said basically.
I work in Stevenage and have rides which link Knebworth ,Nupp End , Mardley ,Hammer green to Tewin and through Hertford to Broxbourne , Epping and Home (north london).
I have a circular one , which after Tewin takes in Bramfield woods and back to Stevenage. Loads of Bways to explore get a map.I found a new "bit" last time i was out , but never found Jedi's place yet!,So loads more to explore!
I have a new baby so pinning me down for a ride is now, sadly, even more difficult than before! But happy to try to get together. No Shredding though. ๐Ÿ˜€

Hi Chappers & Co

We ride out from Hitchin every Sunday @ 8.30am for about 3 hours around the local tracks. And there's lots of them. We go up as far as Stotfold, round towards Luton (taking in Gt Offley & the famous Telegraph Hill); down around Whitwell & over beyond Stevenage to Walkern.

There are about 30 of us but generally get 6/7 out regularly. We come from all around with 3 coming in from Stevenage. We post the rides on Bikeradar.com (Forums-MTB-routes & rides-mtb Rides-'Hitchin'). The log of our most recent rides are posted on 'cycle buddy' & search 'SG6'.

We meet outside Pine Hills Hospital, Benslow lane, Hitchin & there is unrestricted parking there - should you wish to drive.

There is also another couple of useful outfits you can google: 'Silly Grin' - who are a good bunch & ride around Beds & Herts; & 'OTT MTB' who ride out from Hapenden.

Hope to see you sometime - ALL welcome!!

John

Grab an OS map and explore from mardley heath up towards the east side of stevenage, some nice bridleways out there. It was my old stomping ground until last year. Do check out the grinners, they're a good bunch of lads.

Hi Sticky
Yep I thought I would show you some of our local singletrack highlights riding up the Balk (in Lilley); and down Chalk Hill (outside Great Offley). Not to mention Telegraph Hill - local MTBers will know them well.

We're out tomorrow morning again to go on another of our classic local rides - 8.30am outside Pine Hills Hospital, Benslow Lane, Hitchin. There is some unrestricted parking along the road.

All welcome for a 2-3hr ride..... John
