[Closed] Monstercross chainline / chainset help please

I'm slowly gathering the parts for my Van Dessel WTF build; 105 STIs, drop bars etc. Rear hub spacing is 135mm so Avid BB7 Roads on the way.

I've got a 105 chainset and front mech waiting to go on, but with that spacing will I be OK with 105 stuff, or do I need MTB cranks and front mech to get the right chainline?

Thanks

I'd expect clearance issues with a road chainset.

Clearance around what? I've tried out the chainset and the rings clear the frame OK - and the picture on the Beardedman website appear to show a road chainset which is why I got one. Just concerned about the chainline.

That was my concern - fair enough.

Chainline should be fine if the CS clears the c'stays.

Cheers ... fingers crossed once I get it done that it's all OK.

You can fiddle about with it a little bit by using either ... different sized (1mm vs. 2.5mm) spacers (from Velosolo - bottom of this page), or use the supplied ones in different combinations, (ie 2 on the drive side vs. 1 on the drive side et cetera).

Don't quote me here, but I'm pretty confident the external MTB BB's have a bit more thread length on them than do their road going cousins - which might also be something to have in mind of you do need to run more spacers on one side (as you'll have more thread to go into the shell itself).

AFAIK road chainsets fit 68mm BBs only and come with no spacers.

Thanks for that OCB.

Road chainsets & BBs don't use BB spacers (68mm as cynic-al says) and chainsets axles are a bit shorter. I might be able to get a single spacer on the driveside BB [I'm using a MTB BB anyway) but will have to see if the cranks will bolt up properly.

Want to use road cranks as 50/34 works better than 40/28 (or whatever MTB doubles are) for a set up that will be weekday commuter and and weekend ride-what-I-find lanes and double track in the Yorkshire Wolds.
