I do enjoy a ‘shed-thread’. I’ve shown mine off before and I know I’m lucky to have the space. Somehow tho I always fill it mainly as I have loads of MTB stuff and loads of aero-modelling stuff. Bikes on the wall, gliders in the rafters but too many small bits and bobs to file neatly.

Aldi came through with 2 wall mounted storage units at £9 a pop. I’m sure the original ones cost me about £30 ten years ago. Also meant I broke out my new DeWalt drill after two cheapo JCB ones went back with stripped gears.

Work in progress. Mug of tea for inspiration.

New units installed. Checked with a spirit level. Obviously. A man has to have some standards 🙂

Bench now clear, all stuff I use a lot is to hand. Tool wall looking mighty 🙂

Anybody have anything shed-y to share? That was a very therapeutic afternoon’s work.

Thanks Alex, you've just cost me a trip to Aldi. Christ knows what I'm going to come out with 😉

It makes such a difference having a nice, light, clean, warm(ish) place to fettle the bikes and sort kit etc. I think I'd struggle more with motivation if I still had the cold, draughty, dark, dusty, cramped garage at my old house. A lot of effort (and money) went into making the new one a nicer place to be and tinker, makes things less of a chore for sure. And yes I also know I'm lucky so have such luxury.

When we moved here, the house was a total mess. It did however have a concrete slab that I immediately diverted funds to build a big shed. Mainly for my outside office. For which it’s never really been used.

Agreed tho, insulation, a couple of wall heaters, properly secure and weather proof makes a massive difference. When the kids were younger and the house was always a mess, the shed was my oasis of tidiness 🙂

I don’t feel guilty for a second on what we’ve spent on the big shed. I almost want to move house so I can plan a new one!

Aldi is great. I always enjoy a sojourn down the ‘crap aisle’. You never know what you’ll find.

Amen brother. And a bit of peace and quiet 🙂

While mine isn't perfect and I'd do a few things differently if starting from scratch rather than having to work within constraints of what was there and available space, I really can't face the work again. Maybe in a few years when the memory has faded.

Yep, I’m starting to learn the urge of ‘pottering’. Sadly I don’t have room for a beer fridge. Poor planning on my part.

The other side is full of boxes where the home office was meant to be. Oh and

Not sure about the tidy bit, but it was certainly an oasis. Nothing like hiding in the garage with a beer and a bit of music and having a fettle.

I reckon I got that off my Dad. He was always in the garage knocking up something of questionable value 🙂 It wasn’t until I had my own kids that I realised that the what was somewhat less important than the when...

I have the box and camping gear storage bit but haven't resorted to riding bikes indoors yet. Though if the wet weather continues...

I reckon I need at least a clear fortnight (well, 2 separate weeks, really) to sort my garage. It's huge and if I wasn't a scruffy lazy arse it could be fantastic - double garage with only 1 small car, plus space upstairs.
Needs floor redoing, roof insulating, massive trip to the dump and preferably a rolly door to replace the up&over so I can hang shit up from the saved downstairs roofspace. After that I can worry about making it all pretty by painting the walls and properly making space for tools

Instead, 🙁

What's the construction of your shed Alex? Have you bought a "standard" shed and souped it up? Or was it designed to be insulated, etc?

I've got a big brick built greenhouse and shed in my garden, rotting and collapsing. I fancied pulling it down and replacing with a home office / dad space, but it needs to be usable all year round

@scardeypants - that image makes my teeth itch 😉 Big old space that, should be a proper man cave. And you’ve got at least one beer fridge already in place!

@leon. Sort of. There was a firm in Hereford who build ‘bespoke’ sheds. So they took one of their standard designs and modified it a bit to fit the slab already laid. We then added all the electrics and insulated floor, walls and roof with Kingspan. I had about seven mates come over and we did most of it in a weekend. Cost me a lot of beer that job 🙂

The ‘office’ side is actually pretty nice as it’s all painted wood whereas the workshop side is just plasterboard and OSB. I’ve had to re varnish the floors a couple of times, and just replaced both doors as they’d warped badly over the years. Took the opportunity to put more security in.

Biggest job is ducksback’ing the outside every couple of years. Couple of days work. My old big shed in our previous house had hot and cold running water. I miss that, especially the warm water hose!

Mines like scaredeypants :/ but only a single, it used to be a double but converted half into a play room for the kids. Now i dont have room to move in ours as its full of kids stuff and crap the other half needs to deal with.

In a quick edit after reading that back our garage sounds just like our house 🙁

My shed is set up for all the gardening stuff. The garage is set up so that the car will still go in

A timely thread. Just this weekend finished the flooring. Still need to swap the lights for led panels and maybe paint the ceiling (I realise this is the wrong order but got a v.good deal on the carpet tiles)

Before Jan 2017

After

@tracey - I hope you didn’t pack the dog in that bag 🙂

@theotherjamie. That looks awesome. Amazing how much room there is once you’ve sorted out all the crap. I am envious of your unit with built in tool wall!

So jealous, lost most of my garage to building materials, amazing hw much space sheet stuff takes up. Hoping to have it back b6 the end of the year. Some built in units would be awesome. Costco do some but they are very pricey

Cheapest range Ikea kitchen units with a plywood worktop. They're only 37cm deep rather than 60cm so not the biggest workspace but means I could still get a decent size car in that side if needs be.

There's three 800wx1000hx370d wall cabinets on the other side and IIRC the lot was less than £500.

Yeah my garage needs some work.

It's got to the stage that you can't really move in it. There's a shed on the horizon, leaving the garage for toys, but maybe not until next year.

@Tracey - how easy is it to lift the bikes off their hangers like that? Do the bars all get in the way of each other? I think I might hang ours like that.

No problems lifting the bikes off the hooks. The rear wheels are on the floor so the hooks are just holding in place. The bars don't get tangled.

After moving into a new house last October the garage is finally in my sights. Its a single skin detached garage, for it to be usable all year around should I think of insulating it? or just man up when its hot or cold in there? Plans are for bike workshop zone and a space for my turbo too.

Single skin detached garage here - no issues - ideal for turbo training as it's cool - still need two fans on. Just have a small 'tube' heater to take any damp out. It's a pitched roof, so I have loft storage as well.

Mine was alright until strathpuffer. THe mrs went out for a bike ride with the kids and just threw the bikes in when she was done, then i got back and just dumped all my kit in the middle of the floor.

I might do an hour or so 'working from home' in there today...

That’s not a shed, it’s a barn!

You could build some indoor trails in there as well 🙂

Brilliant. Our slab was for a stable that was never built. I’d be somewhat overawed at what to do with as space as big as yours. Probably end up buying more bikes. And if I did that, probably have to live in there as the better half would throw me out 🙂

@Tracey

Whats the wall mounted air line/ pump/ compressor? Looks useful, is it 240volt?

Hi Tracey

I think you mean my electricity supply! But a wall mounted compressor is a great idea. I do have a 100 litre compressor but it lives in the garage at the bottom of garden...

Until 18 months ago this space was full of junk - it wasn’t uncommon for us to go 12 months without opening the door. Now I’m downstairs every night on the turbo/ treadmill/ gym or fettling the bikes - it’s made a massive difference to my lifestyle.

Tim

For those more materials minded; my garage floor is concrete but the builders put self levelling compound on top. It seems to 'dust' heavily as I understands its not a 'final finish'. Any thoughts on what I can use as a final layer? I'd love to achieve what I see in some of the pictures above.

Some nice set-up there 🙂

I've got a 16' x 10' shed in our new garden but could do with some insulation. What's the best way to do it? Just kingspan & board over?

Yes its a 240 vault compressor. Main job is for tubeless tyre setting up

Cheers.
I'll probably do the same once I've cleared some space.

I like to tell myself that wall mounting that way has the added advantage of keeping fork seals lubed

That’s what we did. Pretty simple and very effective.

Mains compressors rock. I use mine for all sorts of stuff. And changing tyres is almost a pleasure.

In terms of sealant.. our old garage was like that, I can’t remember what we bought but we just painted it on over a weekend and it sealed the floor for good...

Massive shed envy here. Some brilliant use of space by you guys. I’m stuck with an Asgard shed / bike storage and doing any maintenance on the patio.

Its an Aldi one and lifts of the wall if needed. We have the same in the camper and both have been godsends when popping tubeless tyres on.
The floor paint is made by Ronseal and has been down 6 years and is driven on daily. The back of the garage is interlocked floor tiles that just happened to be going spare.
