thinking of getting some for a cheapy project.

do people like them in general?

Yes.

Got them on 3 bikes, and had them on several others before.

Just make sure you mount them properly - ie not low like road bars

If you Google image search for "miketually solitude" (without the ""), there are a few photos of my (blue) Solitude with Midge bars. I have them set up following the advice of Matt Chester's articles on 63xc.com, so the drops are about the same saddle-bar drop as my mid-90s flat bar Kona. Some of Alex's drawings appear in the search results, so you can see how the height compares.
