I am new to dual suspension having only ever ridden a cheap hard tail - advice sought:

1 How do I set the front and rear suspension up to suit me?

2 What do I need to do for the routine maintenance of the dual suspension?

3 what's that pump for?

I know my questions are v basic but I am not at all technically minded....Thanks.

As its a Trek you must have bought it from a dealer, did they not set it up?

Google the suspension for setup.

the pump is for setting the air pressure in your shock.

as br said, the dealer should have helped with this stuff.

The linky is a good starting point, there is a video on hoe to set-up your DRCV shock on the Trek website that is very helpful as well. It is trial and error, also preference thing. Take your time and take that shock pump out on the trail with you and try the reference settings with +/- 5 PSI to get a feel for what you prefer.

NOTE* Br is correct, the shop your purchased from should be helping you with the set-up of your bike its their job!

I don't own one, but as the rear shock contains 2 chambers you need to screw the shock on until it registers a pressure, then screw it on further to access the 2nd chamber. If you don't then your shock settings will be wrong when it comes.to actually riding the bike.

I think this is why the test bike I tried felt so cak.

If in doubt take it back to the shop & get them to explain how it works, what all the settings actually mean/do & get them to show you how to set it up. Make notes of the settings, so you can check them/adjust them without worrying about how to get them back.

Poorly set-up suspension feels awful so the shop shouldn't have let u buy a £2k bike without helping u set it up.

Yes they set it up but I was in a total daze from having spent so much money I wasn't taking anything in. I think I'll nip back down to the shop with it and get them to go through the whole lot again. Thanks for your help.

Just make sure you make notes or get them to jot down the settings & make sure you understand what they refer too.

You should get as a minimum for the fork & shock:

- Air pressure
- Rebound setting (how many clicks of the dial from fully anti-clockwise or clockwise)

I'd be tempted to get them to tell you what to do and you actually make the adjustments. That way you'll understand and get more for a feel of it, so you are more confident to do it in future. It can be quite daunting.
If you have a note of the base settings, then at least you can fiddle around with it and will be able to return to those settings if it feels wrong.

Probably worth wearing something close to your riding gear & taking your camelbak with it's usual fill along as well., so they can set it up for your riding weight (incl. kit).
