Do I REALLY need dual ply?
Or is it possible to get away with Single ply, high pressures and tubes with gloop?
Real experiences please.
jonzoReal experiences please.
Nico recommends dual ply.
@ jimjam... which ones?
Up to you, I usually run dual ply HRs, thick tubes
jonzo... which ones?
He is sponsored by hutchinson but he often runs maxxis and is known to mix and match. Couldn't tell you what models but what works for him may not suit the average joe.
If you run good tubeless and are confident in them to take the beating then no. IME Lust Maxxis can let you down.
cant tell you which ones but nico had nobblies on the front and a semislick! on the rear, when he got the uplift bus from allemont
I've seen pics of Nico's bike with HR front and Larsen back but the Larsen is only available in single ply?
No...Its dual ply no or have the stopped making it? Shame. Just be warned about Larsen. Its very good on a lot of things but on wet grass it gets faster when you brake!!!!
Dual ply all the way, it's very rough and rocky and super easy to pinch flat.
Just get Dual Ply, unless you plan on really mincing down. ๐
Dual ply!!!! Rode one year with dual ply and normal tubes had no punctures. Rode another year with minion/ high roller tubeless DH tyres and had two (expensive) punctures. Am going back to dual ply with tubes!
You can get larsens in dual ply - i have a st 2.35 in the shed, replaced with single ply to save a bit of weight on my pitch, same with the high roller on the front. If i was doing the mega i'd definately go dual ply or a very good tubeless set up.

yes.

only if you run silly high pressures, and ride slower than an old nun.
unless you're very good at riding quickly / sketchily over sharp rocks, riding lines you don't necessarily want to be on.
Done it 3 times and have had dual ply minions with Maxxis DH tubes running normal pressures and not punctured once.
The course is not actually that hard on tyres, but it would be a bitch if you got a flat!
Last year with dual ply WTB front and Dual Ply maxxis HR rear. Thick thick tubes. Got one ouncture from a thorn about 2 inchs long! I say 'thorn', it was technically a branch i reakon.
This year though - new tubless wheelset, so - dual ply 2.35 minion front and dual ply 2.35 Larsen rear. Both converted to tubeless at high pressure (ie latex inside).
Gonna spend a few days trying it out. If i have any issues i've some tubes to chuck in there and last years tires/wheelset as a spare.
Couldn't turn down the chance to drop 1.3kg in wheelset/tubes and if it works as it should - WIN!
I'd chance a Larsen in the dry stuff but haven't seen any dual ply versions anywhere?
got mine from winstanleys.
Crc for a supertacky? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=48398
i went with 60a. They are all over - if you google it.
Dual Ply High Roller 2.35 Super Tacky and Dual Ply Larsen 2.35 Super Tacky ordered.
God knows what they'll be like in 6 inches of slush!
In for a penny....
God knows what they'll be like in 6 inches of slush!
i don't think it'll be much like last year - i'm thinking more 'exposed rocks with no snow' from what i understand about the conditions this winter/spring.
Dual Ply. You *will* have to take a compromised (read rocky as ****) line choice at some point.
And if you punture in qually you can wave goodbye to any hope of making the A final.
Done it once before: 3 of us: all UST, with mix of UST dual Ply Maxxis, and Michelin DH. 1 pinch puncture at the bead between the 3 of us (on a Maxxis).
I'm thinking of running:
Quali: UST Minion ST front and UST Minion 60a rear.
Race: Conti Rubber Queen 2.4 front and UST Minion 60a rear
Last thing you want to do is flat in the quali, but faster rolling RQ should help in the main event.
Jonzo: good luck with the Larsen ๐ Never tried them myself but not a huge amount of bite there. Think there is a huge difference between what the pros can get away with running and what suits mere mortals. Also watch wearing the rear supertacky down to a semi-slick in the week before the race.
@DeeW Laresens despite their appearance offer plenty of grip especially in loose dry conditions but as one previous comment suggested... they just clog under braking on wet grass then just LET GO!
My bias is towards the DH sections so I'm looking for something that will run quickly to help out on uphill and pedally singletrack. I've run this combo before so know "where they are" but was unsure as to whether I'd "get away" with single ply.
