To be fair he's probably deleted any unfavourable comments.

A guy cuts the course in a race and gets disqualified, and you care so much about it !!!!!!!!!! Why ?
Given that this has up till now been referred to as a 'French Line', should it not henceforth be called a 'Scottish Line'?
(I would have suggested calling it a 'British Line', but I know how some Scots get annoyed about their sportsmen and women being described as British rather than Scottish.)
Hes only sorry he got caught.

That mega hole looks great fun. Where is it?
[s]Burnley?[/s] Blackburn Lancashire.
About the size of the Albert Hall

It's the offended generation, innit?.
It took long enough to come out and admit his mistakes but at least he has. So fair play to him. Everyone makes stupid decisions at some point of their life. It's how they handle it that makes them a good or bad person. I believe he is sincere, if maybe that sincerity has been prevoked by outrage. But I don't believe he needs his career or sponsorship ending for a stupid move in 1 race....

Clearly that is up to the sponsors & whether or not they consider that they are suffering from reputational damage by associating themselves with a cheat.
However, I think it is odd that some on here seem to think that the whole thing should be totally ignored or that he is being persecuted simply by being identified. It is a high profile race in mtb terms & he is a sponsored rider. This isn't some bloke getting a KOM on strava while using an e-bike.
I don't see how calling a bloke out for thinking he could do what he wanted and blatantly cheating as being part of an offended generation, personally I couldn't give a crap as i wasn't there and it doesn't affect me what so ever, but the people who do care cant really let this guy take them for a fool can they,to much of that nowadays, right back to my daily mail:)
Lots of people took Lance Armstrong's cheating quite badly too. He also went went through a stage of denial. Maradona, Ben Johnson and Rosie Ruiz. The spanish paralympic basketball team had its detractors too.

Is there much prize money on offer?
Probably more than at UCI DH races

Obviously really, I was merely stating my thoughts. I personally wouldn't want him to lose his backing now he has made an apology.
Completely with you around some saying it doesn't matter and should be ignored. I find that a little narrow minded. Cheating, is cheating and is the scourge of all sports.
Do I think this chap would of admitted to his mistake if there was no GoPro footage...no, so I take the sincerity of his post with a swig of 'wish I hadn't been caught'. But he has apologised, it's been taken seriously as he has been DSQ.
I think it's time to move on, the long term ramifications for this chap will live longer than this thread I suspect
It's not exactly a sincere apology though, is it? "I didn't realise what bit of the course I was on."
It's just an embarrassment for him from start to finish. Man up.
He doesn't grasp that he'd get more respect for just holding his hand up than trying to make partial excuses.
There is the fact that he will be known as Joe 'CheatyMcCheatFace' Connell in most MTB (STW at least) circles. Knowing how most MTBers are, I expect that he will have the piss royally taken forever and a day at races too.
It's only the mega avalanche. It's a fun race and this year the Sunday races were run on a hastily arranged short course because of weather and no one knew what they heck was going on. I think everyone wants to move on from this years final.
unimpressed
he should have gone full lance and held on till the very end
its not like he did 7 tdf wins and told a few fibs on the way

I'll be amazed if anyone normal ever calls him that, you're making that common mistake of thinking STW is anything more than a tiny percentage of the MTB community.

Indeed. Shit thing to do, but a storm in a tea cup. Whiny middle class cockbag world strikes again.

Cheaters whether big or small time need calling out. Otherwise it just becomes normalised.
Next time I catch a kid looking at a phone in a test, passing a note to a mate, or plagiarising research from a website, I'll just pat them on the back and praise them for thinking outside the box shall I?
He could have held his hands up after the race, or at any time in the last 6 days, but it appears that he has only now apologised because he got caught on video and got called out on the internet repeatedly. Shit apology and shit response from all the people willing to gloss over his cheating.
I'm happy to say that Joe Connell will always be 'Mr Joe CheatyMcCheatFace races for Focus who like to sponsor cheaty riders Connell' to me. Bless his little cheaty socks ๐
Nope, next time you find someone cheating in a test (or race) or plagiarising just disqualify them from the test (or race), submission etc., tell them why they were wrong and hope that they understand and won't do it again....Or you could whip up a frenzy around the whole school or college and get all of the students and their friends on the internet to ritually humiliate them causing a disproportionate amount of upset and animosity.
Young guy does something stupid, gets caught and tries to wriggle out of it before finally admitting his mistake. It's hardly a new occurrence is it? I've no doubt he'll learn from it and hope that he's allowed to move on from it.
Common sense whereisthurso, its generally at a premium on here.
Some folk prefer a dailymailwitchunt.

Let the beef begin
Jeez, some of you have no sense of humour do you!
Nobody's asking for him to be hung drawn and quartered, but if there is piss to be ripped then let it be so. If he'd admitted his mistake off the bat then fair enough, but a half hearted, and half-truthed apology from both him and Focus makes them fair game.
Going back to the cheating in school, then whilst I would accept an apology from a lower years student at anything above yr10-11 it can actually mean exams and controlled assessment can be invalidated. So there can be and are serious repurcussions to cheating.

Young guy does something stupid. If he'd managed to delete the references to it, various media outlets had omitted to name him thanks to sound commercial considerations, then he might have thought he could get away with it and conclude that cheating was a good way forward. I don't think being called a cheat when you are in fact, a cheat is the equivalent of a witch hunt.
Hopefully he'll lose his sponsors and have to put in a few shifts down the pit. He might grow up a bit then. The enduro scene reminds me of Angry Boys if I'm honest.
Highlight his potential for senior management while you are at it.Next time I catch a kid looking at a phone in a test, passing a note to a mate, or plagiarising research from a website, I'll just pat them on the back and praise them for thinking outside the box shall I?
I don't really give a shit about it but I don't find it increasingly strange that sites are willing to discuss the incident and the subsequent ban/apology without naming the perp
Don't want to lose precious marketing dollars from Focus I suspect!
Just wondering whether to post up his qualifier run, for another 8 pages of frothing.
It's not the actual cheating but all the stuff that came after it. If he had owned up straight away rather than deleting all the posts, the media being crap and the rather pathetic attempts at apologising from focus and himself we wouldn't be seeing this discussion. Had it been a non sponsored nobody (although I'd never heard of the bloke till this). You'd be seeing none of the attention the story has been given.
(although I'd never heard of the bloke till this
Hes been racing since he was a lad, and is a very promising EWS rider, hence all the fanboys as you like to call them, ye canny race for that long and not know a lot of folks in the race world.
B.A.Nana did he do the same thing in quail or what?

Probably middleclass, I may or may not be a cockbag, but I generally prefer to do my whining away from the keyboard. Except when it comes to mildly trolling STW ๐

I sent Elliott a message, "Ride to the top?... the very top?" .......... he and his Nukeproof Mega arrived at the lift station ready for a mini-adventure after investing our life savings on the Swiss lift pass (70CHF, 1 ride).
Disappointing article.
Spoiler: They got a lift up, they didn't ride up at all.
Except when it comes to mildly trolling STW
Isn't that what everyone here does? I'd always assumed STW was one big (yet quite friendly) troll.
Occasionally someone wanders in who doesn't understand the rules, takes it too seriously, and runs away screaming. But you have to put up with some collateral damage.
It's a bit of a non-apology in as much as he's not really taken responsibility for the blatant cheat. If you take this line out
In the madness and confusion of the mass start I didn't realise which part of the track I was on until I reached the fireroad.
It sounds like a heartfelt apology but with it in, it's just doffing the cap with a "temporary insanity" plea.
Whatever. The world will get over it.
