Does it exist?

Its not on Maxxis website but they are well known for not putting every single version of their tyres on the website

I have the 27.5 version on my winter wheels and want the 29er version for my summer wheels

Not interested in any other tyres before anyone suggests other brands or casings, widths etc....

Been down the serial tyre swapper route and the above is my perfect rear tyre so need to find it for a 29er wheel

I think they're only Exo+ or dual ply in 2.4 - DD is 2.3

Fwiw I run the DH casing and they're no problem to get on or off

That link's for an Exo not a DD.

This might possibly be it? https://www.evanscycles.com/maxxis-minion-dhr-ii-29-dd-3c-tr-EV309665

Has 2.35 and 2.4 in the listing (2.35 doesn't exist)

Thanks but that is an EXO casing not a Double Down casing

Thanks Northwind

Looking in the ask a question section someone has replied with a picture of the 2.35 they ordered and in fact the tyre and packaging says 2.3 so that one is a no go

Will drop Maxxis UK an email and see what they say

No is the answer to your question. There's a very limited number of their tyres in DD an decent width that are not Maxxgrip. Maxxis 2.3 is tiny. I have just been through this and found the high roller is one, CRC have the DD 2.5 WT for about 40 quid at the moment. I don't really get on with high rollers bit it's going on the rear. The other option could be a WTB Judge in tough and fast. Not sure if they size up quite big though. Pinkbike reviewed them a while back.

Isn't that maxxgrip, the soft one rather than the 3c maxxterra?

ooohh so close!!!

So they do make them in maxxgrip so they should make them in maxxterra!

Yet the one above is not listed on the Maxxis website, so there is hope for a maxxterra version

Cheers honourablegeorge

Hmm... didn't notice it was MaxxGrip, had it book marked as a rear tyre for a trip abroad.

Used a 2.3 maxxterra 3c doubledown since July last year, no complaints but it's on a 27mm internal rim. I'm told the 2.3 rolls better by far than the wt versions although I haven't tried it so unless op is using proper wide rims I'd say give it a try

Have a look at the USA site to see if it exists (looks like it doesn't), then copy and paste the part number into your browser and search UK sites to buy.

Looks like you can have it narrower, or softer tread, or exo+ casing. Which are you willing to compromise?

I'm running 30mm rims and the 2.4WT on my 27.5 rims is perfect so the 29er wheels have to be the same or very near (2.5WT)

No compromise Im afraid, 2.3 is too narrow for my rims, softer tread and exo casing wont last long in my riding conditions (been there, done that and killed two tyres within months of each other)

If Maxxis come back and say that combo is not available then ill have to decide to maybe keep the 27.5 on the rear this summer and just run the 29er up front

I feel your pain OP, why do Maxxis make so many flippin' tyres - but not the ones we actually want.

Like the poster above, I got a 2.5in HR from CRC for the rear. It's well draggy though.

Agree, such a pain.

I’m on the eternal look out and hope for an 29 Assegai EXO+ in MaxxGrip for the front & DHR 2 2.4 DD in MaxxTerra for the back. If I could find the same front but as a Shorty, my tyre life would be complete.

I'm a big fan of the DHR2 on the back but if you can't get the variety you want (I really don't get why Maxxis always pair the sticky compounds with the heavy casings - give us a sticky compound with a lighter casing for the front and a harder compound with a stronger casing for the back!) then I'd recommend the Specialized Eliminator. The Black Diamond one is strong whilst the Grid one is like Exo.

No choice of compounds - they're not as sticky as MaxTerra 3C but they have more grip than the 60a or Dual compound Maxxis with a better wear rate than any of them. The 2.3 Eliminator is a good size, similar to the DHR2 2.4 and the 2.6 Eliminator is a bit bigger than that (but not a 2.6 by any means!) I don't think it's got quite as much braking grip as the DHR2 but it's not far behind at all, it's very predictable and it rolls fast for how knobbly it is.

Thanks but the Eliminator black diamond is the tyre i removed from the 29'ers after 2 rides, they were terrible tyres for me, not a fan of Specialized Tyres (they have come on the last three Spesh bike Ive bought in the last three years)

Maxxis DHF and DHR2 are the only tyres i will run now, they suit my riding style and conditions so Im not interested in any other tyres, was a serial tyre swapper and tried all the recommended ones like magic mary's, e-wild enduros etc... the DHF and DHR2 just work for me

You can always count on STW for excellent advice! 😉

The DHR2 is definitely the king of rear tyres! I've got the Eliminator 2.3 Grid on my Levo with a Rimpact insert (Hillbilly 2.6 up front) and thankfully it works for me because it's both cheap and long lasting. I had the Butcher 2.6 there before and that somehow managed to roll slower and have no more grip when cornering and less grip when braking.

Im surprised your still running the spesh tyres on the Levo

Had the 3.0 Purgatory grids on my 2017 Levo

2.8 buthcher grids on my 2018 Kenevo

Then my 2020 Levo came with the Butcher on the front and Eliminator black diamond on the rear

All were used for 2-3 rides and then replaced with magic marys or e wild enduros which were better but none matched the dhf and dhr2 so thats all i run now

"Im surprised your still running the spesh tyres on the Levo"

Me too! I really like the Hillbilly 2.6! Not a fan of the Butcher 2.6 at all. They're quite a lot better with the Rimpact inserts in them. The Eliminator 2.3 was a half price gamble - maybe with the lighter casing it feels better than the Black Diamond? Where/how I ride I don't seem to need tougher than Exo. I don't like bigger than actual 2.5" tyres, they always feel too squirmy for me.

Caveat: Life was too busy this last year so it's the first year I haven't gone somewhere rocky for a weekend or three, it's all been dirt, mud and roots under-tyre (apart from taking my gnarly hardtail on the family holiday to Mallorca and doing lots of cheeky steep push up and plummet down dust and rock riding).

I'm looking at the Maxxis price list and the DHR II 29 x 2.4 WT DD is only available in Maxx Grip, not Maxx Terra.

However they do offer the 29 x 2.3 DD in Maxx Terra if that helps? Product code TB85927400

New Assegai and Dissector DDs are all Maxx Grip too.

The Aggressor comes in a 29 x 2.50 WT DD with dual compound or the High Roller II 29 x 2.50 WT DD is available in Maxx Terra.

Hope this helps.

Have to laugh at the fast rolling Dissector only being offered in the stickiest compound.

Does that mean they've discontinued the Exo MaxTerra Assegai? Bloody hope not, I'm really liking the one I bought from Sweden. Also like the look of the Dissector but not in MaxGrip flavour.

If you are ok with the Exo casing then the dissector is a great rear tyre. Wish they did it in DD Maxterra. Ze Germans have them in stock if you can't find them in the UK.

@Teapot, is that the UK list only or the full list? Maxxis UK don't bring in the full range.

Thread resurrection time!

So having no luck getting a Maxxis DHR2 in 29x2.4WT or 2.5WT with DD casing and maxterra compound when i started this thread in February i decided to give a Maxxis Assegai 29x2.5WT MaxxGrip with downhill casing a go, i fitted it on the 1st of March

I was lucky enough to get the tyre cheap from a friends shop, being MaxxGrip i wasn't expecting it to last long

First off the sidewalls have been spot on, the Downhill casing has done its job on many occasions, many EXO casings would have been killed by now (done two EXO casings on my XC hardtail this year!)

Now for tread wear, the tread is starting to look worse for wear and will need replacing in the next month or so, this is after 6 months of use and 150 miles

The most Ive had out of any Maxxis tyre with Maxxterra compound and EXO casing tyre is 225 miles before the tread is knackered (normally the EXO sidewalls get slashed well before that distance, normally 100 miles and the inconvenience of pushing the bike back to the car or bodging a repair to get me back) )

So im back to my original dilemma, finding a Maxxis 29x2.5WT DD/downhill casing tyre with Maxxterra compound

I could go for another Assegai and just accept that ill only get 150 miles out of it

Wow! I thought I'd had some excessive tyre wear with a rear Michelin WE that had done about the same time, but about 3 times the distance...Are you riding over sandpaper!

I've had a 2.5 DD Maxxgrip Assegai on the front and a 2.4WT DHR2 EXO+ MaxXterra on the back of a couple of months now. More than 150miles of riding and very little wear.

I'm going to Peaslake tomorrow so I guess they'll be bald by the end of the ride 🙂
