I have a problem with my Rockshox Pikes/ Maxle, in that however tight I do the Maxle up it leaves play in the front wheel.
I have changed the bearings in the Ringle hub, but its not the problem, I have also tried another wheel in, and its still the same.
So eliminating the wheel it just leaves the Maxle...or possibly the Pikes?
I remember reading someones post on here pre the hacking of the site who had a similar problem, I belive it was found to be the forks?
As I have already spent £20 on new bearings, I didnt want to go and spend £42 on a new Maxle and find that still didnt sort it.
The Pikes are 2005/6 so a warranty claim is doubtfull.
Any help will be much appreciated as is really doing my head in now!
Is the wheel moving side to side or up and down on the Maxel?
Are you fitting the maxle properly? Are all the parts in it free to move?
You put the maxle in and screw it into the fork leg, then tighten the plastic nut on the end finger tight then flip the QR - flipping the QR controls the endfloat and expands the maxle thru wedges inside the maxle.
My guess is on or both of the wedges are not working properly
I would say that the movement is side to side.
Having striped the Maxle down a few times it appears to be working ok.Both wedges compressing when Qr leaver is flipped, both end springs fitted as well.
I also tried a different QR lever, and its still the same.
Its really annoying me now!
Keep any advise comming please.
Are you tightening the plastic nut up before flipping the lever? Sounds to me like this is the issue. Side to side movement is end float which is the maxle is installed properly should be removed.
It's the lowers.
Just recieved my 08 Pikes back after having the lower's replaced due to exactly what your describing, lucky for me they are under warranty.

How knackered is your maxle QR lever? On mine, where it's been open and closed so many times the ovalised cam part of the lever at the pivot end is worn away, so does nothing when the lever is shut. To get the wheel tight I have to hold the nut on the other side of the axle and just wind up the QR lever until tight
I am thinking it could well be lowers as Carlos has said.
Icj, I have tried the maxle with a nearly new Qr, the existing one shows little or no wear, so not convinced its that.
As far as I can see I am installing the maxle correctly, Tandemjeremy, but will try what you suggest again.
Ok so if it is the lowers any body had them changed or done the job themselves, looking for a ball park figure on a cost.
Also can anyone give a link to an exploded diagram of a maxle.

Problem seems to be solved!
I stripped the Maxle down another time, opened out the cut outs on the axel with a screwdriver and streched both springs.
I did this after trying it in the forks without the wheel and realising that it wasnt locking on the fork leg due to not expanding.

rusty you said you tried a different QR in the Maxle how did it fit? And did you have any problems tightening things up? Ive been thinking about trying a Hope one in mine for a bit of a colour contrast.

I_Ache from what I can see the Qr is the same as any other, when the Maxle is taken apart. The only thing you will need is to use a rear one as the lengh is longer than a standard front wheel one, the rear one I tried was about 1omm short.
The only issue you may have is the actual thickness of the Qr lever, without looking at one of my Hope skewers I seem to remeber they are quite bulky, whereas I had to use a narrow mavic skewer to fit in the slots when its in the closed position.
