Okey let's pour some gasoline on this fire!

So I ordered a pair of wheels from dhgate and got a pair that looked fantastic. Only problem is that seem to be built at let's call it below average quality.

Unless I decide otherwise (or someone convinces me to keep 'em), these rim's are going back to the seller which means a loss of about 100$ on my part, but at least I'll have peace of mind that I won't be riding something that might snap on me while riding down hill.

Listen to the crackling in the video I made, especially the second half of the video).

Best regards,
Dennis M. Mortensen

Why would you want to? You wanted to "POUR SOME GASOLINE ON THE FIRE"... Plenty of folk on here ride road bikes, I'd not worry about that.

Are you suggesting you've bought shit wheels, or fake ones? You're assessing this because they creak a bit in your hands?

The name should have given away that they were fake 😀

I assumed it was a road bike forum because of this thread I read earlier. http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/chinese-replica-frames

I know the wheels are fake, no doubt about that. But if they're utter shit is what I am trying to figure out. People generally like ripping on fakes so I thought that I'd offer a video up for people to have a go at fakes if they wanted to.

But at the same time see if other people have had "creaking" on non-fake carbon wheels like mine do in the video.

That's not the only clue...

Never heard of DHGate, so I Googled. First thing I see "Buy China Wholesale Products on DHgate.com"
Wheels that are £1200 a pair on CRC are $500 a pair on DHGate.
Bargaintastic!

Why would someone buy fake branded wheels from China when properly decent carbon ones can be had from the likes of FarSports or LightBicycle?

Anyway, looks like an Alu rim with a bit of non-structural fairing on it (is it even carbon?) Is it just the fairing that's making the cracking sound? Can't really tell from the video.

Oh look, if I take a 0.5mm thick non structural carbon fibre aero fairing and crush it then it makes cracking noises 😳

My Light Bicycle carbon road wheels don't click or creak, they have just made me have to adjust my riding as they are so light it feels like there's no centrifugal effect, so flicking the bike from side to side climbing, or swerving potholes, is almost unnerving.

They quoted the typical weight as 1295grms, so I was appalled to find mine weighed 1297. How dare they manufacture to 0.2% tolerances? Lead time was 6 weeks and and they were ~£450 all in (~£400 for wheels + shipping + Paypal fees and about £50 for VAT + Parcelfarce fees).

But then they are a quality product from a reputable source, not cheap knock-off alloy wheels with carbon moldings glued on, so probably not much use to you. If I'd wanted heavy alloy wheels with carbon aero glued-on I'd have gone for

I'll try to answer a few questions that seems to be popping up. 😀

Why would I not buy a pair of wheelsets when I could have had a couple of decent ones from FarSports or LightBicycle:

A few reasons actually; First of all I didn't know that there was cheap carbon wheels on other sites that I could've ordered. And had not sure many of these sites actually ship to Sweden. Second, the price seemed like I might as well gamble. Partly for fun and interest in seeing what I would get when ordering a pair of fake wheels. But also I think that the logotype on the rims I bought which coincidently also matches my Mavic shoes.

At the time of ordering the wheels I didn't know what "fairing" was. And I can't say that I really know what it means by now either. I guess it's a shell used simply for the "aero"-part of the wheel? Does it aid in the structural ability of the wheel at all? The crackling is on the inside of the carbon (or glassfiber), probably the epoxy/resin that's splitting a little since they've never been handled like that before; just not sure if it's normal or not.

Crushing it would be a bit of a stretch don't ya think? More like pinching it. It's not like I'm the hulk or anything.

And no, I'm not really complaining. I knew what I was getting my self into when buying a pair of fake's and wanted to know if the quality was ride'able or not (or rather safe enough to ride). And as of now I'll probably be sending them back without a fuzz. Sellers on DHgate (and aliexpress) are terrified of getting bad reviews so that comply to almost anything you can throw at them. I could probably even ask for a deduction of the price and have it split in half if I want to keep the wheelset.

"ignorance is no defence" as they say in legal circles in the UK. I initially looked at getting some cheap/knock-off/generic carbon wheels from Aliexpress, but having done some research I decided I'd rather pay more and get from the likes of Light Bicycle. They are still cheaper than locally-sourced, branded wheels of equivalent weight (USE 24mm carbons £800 on sale reduced from £1100, Dura Ace C24 carbon laminates £580, and both at least 100grms heavier than mine).

I don't need to defend my self, I'm merely giving you my reasons.

Here's another video of the rear wheel (skip to 0:30):
