Tried to service my Mattocs today and things didn't go as planned, my thin walled socket tool cracked trying to undo the air spring 8mm nut. Seems like the place I got them serviced last tightened it up waaay too much . Serves me right for not doing it myself but I didn't have the tools at the time. And yes - I was turning it the right way (clockwise). I managed to loosen it using a 4mm allen key on the inside of the poppet valve, but putting it back together is more of a faff with this method so I need a new thin walled socket. I have the rest of the tools so I don't want to fork out for the whole kit, but no one seems to sell the socket on it's own. I have come across some 8mm sockets designed for pedal servicing, presumably also designed to be thin walled - has anyone used tried of these in a manitou fork? Could be a good way to get one if it fits.

Can't quite remember why - think one didn't have a deep enough recess to go over the air valve, the other may have been a smidgen too thick.
Still looking for a tool if anyone has one for sale.
A box spanner might be thin enough, I need to service my Mattoc's so would be useful to know what I can use without having to buy the official kit. I've already purchased a cheap cassette tool and cut a slot out of it.
I got that far and the cassette tool just wouldn’t do the job. It was too tight!
Just buy a normal socket put it in a drill bit of emery paper or file on the end until it fits
Thanks @Stevet1. I've read in another thread now that the hope one is ever so slightly too big.
I've already modified an old cassette tool (though might also square it off once I've seen the interface for better purchase). I've also got the part number for the Unior tool manitou supply in their kit (Unior 188/2L 6p-HY 1/4" 8mm thin wall socket). Emails sent to both Unior and zyrofisher to see if it is stocked in the UK. Will post back if either come good. Fallback is to make one however I gather it is so thin breaking is easy.
It looks like the mattocs I've bought do not need the larger socket.

There's a Polish company on ebay selling tools (thin wall socket, weird cassette tool and a normal socket) for $40, half the price of the proper Hayes ones. I got those after finding lots of thin sockets which weren't thin enough

I just bought a deep impact socket from Halfords and spent 3 minutes on the bench grinder to get it thin,the impact style are more robust and grind down perfect and the deep just meant it was easier hold whilst I had to grind it down .
I've made a couple using deep sockets, pillar drill and a file. Mostly because I lose them somehow. Never used anything other than a normal socket.
If the tool is cracking it's definitely over torqued as you suspect. They probably didn't have a wrench to hand that did torque anticlockwise.
