Looking at going clipped in from flats and wondering where to go with pedals. The mallets and XTs are the main choices right now but wondering if there were any other options with a nice platform?
They're going to be used for mini-DH races and enduro racing so would prefer something with a stable platform.

Anyone have any experiences of either?

i have old old skool mallets i love em

been going for yonks with a few bearing changes

the new ones are a bit smaller so prob great for gravity enduros, the 2013 ones look to be a bit bigger and more dh friendly

I've both.

My Mallets - the old, old variety, pre-grubscrews are six months short of their eighth birthday and have covered well over twelve thousand miles, with only one precautionary bearing change. The set before sharted themselves after nine months when the bearings prematurely died though.

They're still going strong on my hardtail.

I've a set of the new XT platform jobs as well, which I've had for a couple of months so I can't comment on their reliability, but I can say that they're a fantastic pedal. Shimano's multi-release cleats engage beautifully and are a doddle to use. Highly recommended.

I'd stick with Shimano amid stories of bearing failures among cranks bros pedals (granted, mainly eggbeaters) and not having the ability to jump on and off mates bikes (who will probably have shimanos)! Besides, they are solid, last forever and have a nice action.

The Mallets work well as a grippy flat pedal if you like riding techy descents unclipped, SPD cages are not that grippy.
