Looking for full su...

[Closed] Looking for full sus 29er frame on a budget, what's out there?

Hi guys,

I'm looking to go full suspension at some point in the coming months, but I don't have a lot of cash. I'm thinking of saving up for no more than £1000 (<=£800 ideal) for a frame only option. The idea is to get a decent full sus frame and transfer existing components from my reasonably specced hardtail.

So far I've found:
* On-one Codeine (lack of front mech not ideal, though)
* Cube AMS
* Titus El Guappo (designed for 140mm, may take 120mm, allows for a later upgrade)

To transfer fork it needs to take 120 travel with a tapered headtube. Using Hope Pro II on rear so rear axle not an issue. Only colour that's a deal breaker is blue. Can't stand blue. Everything is blue. Blue everywhere. Too much blue in the world. My main playground is the Peak District so it needs to be Trail/All Mountain/Enduro/<insert trend tag here> capable.

Thanks all!

I'm looking at this the re branded Thumper , you could sell your fork and get a set of 140s and still be under budget .

Nice one! I've never heard of that. The same site lists the Thumber as £20 cheaper. Not only that but it's got an option with 140mm Pikes for £1100!

Seriously good suggestion, thanks!

Really rate my Thumper, great all round bike, bought frame with shock, then built it up myself with a mix of old and new. Used new Pikes and mainly XT. Love it.

A frazz under 6''2", ride a large with 70mm stem. Find it really comfortable and used for some longish day rides etc.
Not sure where you're at but you're welcome to look over mine before pressing the button if unsure etc.

Jesus that is good value, at that price i'd consider a cheeky 29er build next year!

As others have said, just buy that Switchback, either shock option it comes with is fine, stick some nice 140mm forks on the front and that'll be a beast.

The Codine seems to have vanished off the On-One website... and the Titus only takes a 2.1" rear tyre. So that narrows your options a bit!

2014 Norco fluid 9.1 if you can find one around
fluid 9.1
i went to Evans to test ride a much more expensive bike but had to wait for it to be built up so i test rode the fluid to kill some time, i liked it so much i got it instead and saved £700 or so over what i was going to spend. I think i spent £1500.

Looked at the Codine myself, but not having the option of a front mech ruled it out for me. I realise 1x is where it's at for a lot of people, but I fancied 2X. The price of the SRAM X0 11 speed stuff also scared me off.

This.

Glad i'm not the only one not fussed with 1 x systems, my 2 x 9 works perfectly so I wont be changing until it dies....then i'll probably go 2 x 10 if 11 speed stuff is still expensive....i'll go 1 x 11 when it filters down to SLX level, maybe at a push XT.

....but seeing the threads on here of people buying the wrong mechs, breaking mechs trying to make 1 x systems work or having to modify mechs, add 40t or 42t sprockets to get the gears they already had on their previous 2 x 10 systems is hilarious...then trying to justify the weight saving on a 30lb+ mountain bike....while chucking 100ml of gunk into each tubeless tyre....you couldn't make it up.

Trambler thanks for the offer I'm in Worcestershire, I've got a medium Bandit which I'm finding to small . I did a demo day and tried a t129 and I've had a go on a large tallboy both felt much better with the longer front triangle .

Those frames from Blue Flow bikes look great! Does anyone know what type of BB they use and if they will take a triple chainset?

Thanks

My research suggests it's a threaded BB. It's a direct mount derailleur frame so I don't see why it can't take a triple.

I have the Thumper with 150mm Pike (£300-odd from Alltricks.fr) and a CCDB Inline. Plus a 1 degree slackset. It's a very, very good and really versatile bike.

The front mech was a big thing for me too, I like 2x10 and I like Shimano. I want a wide gear range because it's such a versatile bike.

Takes a normal BB external.

OP - sounds to me like you are looking for more than your 120mm forks are up for.

A very fussy mate has just got an Unveil and is very happy.

If you get it it would be nowt short of madness to stick your forks on it, especially when there is a great deal on the 51mm offset Pikes.

Either way good luck and enjoy whatever you get.

That deal with the pikes is super tempting. It'll financially push me back further than I'd like, but it'd be worthwhile.

Another Thumper here, bought direct from the States.

I've got a 140 Sektor on mine, Float CTD and 3x10 SLX. It's still early days but I'm very impressed so far after a day of repeating the XC climb at BPW and absolutely ragging it down all the runs.

Recently picked up a Switchback Unveil 9 with Rockshox from Stuart at Blue Flow bikes.

Fitting a set of 150mm Pikes I bought a couple of months back from alltricks.fr

Just need to get round to finishing the build this week to get out on it at the weekend.

I mentioned the Cube AMS in my original post. I've specifically been looking at this one.

The AMS appeals because it's only a bit over £400, with shock, and has internal routing. The Unveil 9 appeals because it can take 160mm forks without much determent to geometry. Merlin are currently doing 160mm pikes for £475.

I don't know enough about suspension designs to determine between frames on that merit.

That should be cut and pasted to every thread raving about 1x. 😆

Great link tomaso. It's a shame they have nothing in large. I'll keep an eye on that one, though.

They have still got a Large Orange Gyro frame in Sterling Silver or [s]Plasma Blue[/s] for £900 if that's any use.
