my much loved and neglected orange needs a good service. Really busy at work, and don't seem to have time with the kids and domestic duties to give my bike the tlc it deserves.

My question is: have people used their local bike shop for servicing, were they happy with the service (or been happier doing it themselves) and how much did it cost? I have been quoted between £30 and £60 for a service. I am in West Yorkshire so any recommendations would be welcome.

do it your self bike shops always find a problem with it thats realy urgent like replacing my brothers 3day old brake pads and charging £20 for a new set f&r or there will be a problem which takes up a couple of hours labor costs 😉

Put the £60 towards a decent workstand and do it yourself, you could be doing it now while the kids are in bed 8)

if you must go to a shop dont go to stif. woodrups in leeds are very good for doing stuff but tbh id rather do it myself , my bike needs a right good fettle but i just cant be arsed lol if i have time i end up doing something else or even riding it.the other day at gisburn the shifting was getting right on my tits as i need to clean lube and prob change chain too but couldnt be arsed as a ride was on the cards 😉

If you are near Mirfield Colin at Sowerby Brothers is a good honest chap.

I can recommend Crostrax at Rodley, the owner sorted bb threads on a expensive frame for me & didn't charge me as I'd bought a bb.

I recently took one of my bikes to my LBS as it had a bit of a rattle I could identify. He sorted it, gave the bike a once over and only charged me a tenner as he wasn't busy. I'll always go back there even though it's a few miles when the closest shop is less than half a mile because I know I'm not getting ripped off. Oh yeah, the LBS is Freeborn 🙂

depends if you have the ability .....

have spent today sorting out a customers cockups while maintaining his bike ..... no fun and can be more expensive than getting it done right in the first place !

I'd also vouch for Sowerby Bros- very good service, decent price.

If your Bradford side then Firth Cycles in Queensbury, he is very helpful & doesn't overcharge (sometimes very busy)

After helping a mate do battle with a local bike shop over faulty parts on a brand new bike, there isn't a single shop with 20 miles of me that I would trust to be within 10' of my bike with a spanner.

Do it yourself and know it's done properly (or find a mate who you can trust with such things like my mates do).

Get the park tools book, a workstand and a few tools - will pay for itself fairly shortly.
