Okay I was pretty keen on the idea of this ride, in fact I'd been thinking about doing the route since 1978.
Anyway lately there's been talk of a group ride covering the original route up the A5 as best we can.
Talking about a 3/5am start and an overnight in Holyhead, fine so far. Then I gingerly asked about the average speed I should expect - 20MPH for a slow average 😯 for 270 miles non stop = double 😯
Anyone fancying it next year, and expecting to ride at about 17+/- let me know.
Edit; The London Holyhead was a race held in the 60/70/80's. I think it originally started from Marble Arch. I also think Tom Simpson rode it. There is remarkably very little info on this British classic. I used to get up early and watch the off when I was a teenager.
There is a video for sale, (or was) of a couple of these races. It is rather a long way for a day trip. If you think you can cover that in a day, then you must be close to top level competition.
It's a lot less than a 600K Audax and more interesting than a road 12 or 24.
I know several people involved in the organisation and one of the winners.
I'll try dig some info out about it.
I think that chas messengers book has something about it in it.
Who who?
Who what?
Drop me a mail.
Mr P I've lost your email address.
Looks like I'm camping up there nearby, though the Peaks guys are sorting out the location. I'll let you know when they have something sorted.
20 mph sounds like the typical bikers-bullshit. There maybe a few people average 20mph over that route but they will be few are far between, if any.
Sounds like a excellent route good luck.
Thing is some of the guys riding are ex pros.
Starting before 8am? Stuff that!
