Never ever used one in any of the many CK headsets I've had, with no ill effects.
apparently it just helps stop creaking (according to Evolution, they say it's cool to run without it though)... Anyway, I've ordered one for £2 from Winstanley, nae bother really 🙂

Why not ride it first to see if it creaks!? If not then you don't need one.
It's only £2 inc postage... ordered now anyway. I'll ride the bike without it for a bit and see if it actually does creak though 🙂
EDIT: though £2 for a teeny thing plastic ring is fairly ridiculous I have to admit! 🙄
