I've had some invites from unexpected people. I know the system sends invites to people in your address book when you join up (and sometimes afterwards, if you click the button) but these people will only have my address from a previous company.

Someone mentioned the other day that Linked-in has started sending invites on users' behalfs to connections of connections that it thinks might be useful. Is this right?

Obviously: "first world problems", "facebook for pretentious arses", whatever else you like...

But I would like to know if I'd be responding to person X inviting me, or if it's linked-in passing notes and playing match-maker, and my contact with person X is the first they've heard about it.

Ta!

I've never even used linkedin, but get several invites each week from strangers on it.
So the software seems to be happy spamming the world with useless bollox - If I was on it I'd just ignore any invites from anyone I didn't know.

I don't get any non-user generated invites, and have a fairly extensive list of connections...

I got invites to all my emails from people I'd not dealt with for years, any that weren't to my account email I just deleted

Ended up deleting my whole profile about a month ago as I never used it

I have managed to acquire loads of 'Verified' skills without ever adding a single one to my profile. It's just made up a load of them and asked my contacts to verify me against them!

It is becoming a bit of a joke......
