Hi, Looking at building a lightweight wheelset for mtb orienteering events. Ive got some NO-Tubes podium MMX rims and some Tune Kong hubs off some old wheels and was looking at DT Swiss aerolites/sapim CX-ray spokes, but what lacing pattern?

I was thinking of x3 all round, as I had this before with the kong hubs/355 rims and aerolite spokes, with no problems, but Notubes have recommended x2 front and x2 nds/x1 ds rear, which is a bit strange?

Its for a lightweight carbon HT and I weigh 70kg...

Cheers

If it's large flange then 2x makes some sense, otherwise I don't see the point, stans' recommendations will be based on you saving about 12 grams per wheel near the hub I bet...but both will work I guess. They will also involve non-std spoke lengths.

As I said on your other thread, cx-rays are a waste of money.

LOL
Someone had a 1 2 3 4 cross one or something that looked cool recently.

Nah radial all round, makes for nice comfortable wheels.

It's odd how an inanimate object can invoke murderous rage, but that does it.

+1

Just get Revolutions. Get them from Action Sports and they're stonking value.

I just built 3x all round on mine, A2Z hubs and Podium rims, came to 1246g with yellow tape and valves. Very impressed with them so far too.

Three cross on the rear radial on the front.

Radial on a disc wheel... scary.

I got ACIs way cheaper.

Do they not just do one DB spoke, which is significantly heavier than a Rev/Aerolite/CX-Ray?

Like I say, I got my Revs from Action Sports, €0.60 each, they sent 10 spares, I can live with paying that on a nice wheelbuild!

That is cheap njee, IIRC I paid 25-30p or so, the spokes are mid-way between comps and revs in weight (14/17/14?) which works for me as I think revs are a little light for me on the rear at least.

Thanks for the input, few things to think about. Maybe just go for x3 back and front then, as that served me well before with similar components.

cynic-al, are you just against cx-rays due to the cost, so I suppose aerolites are well out of it! Weight wise there is virtually not much in it between revs and these two blades but as my events usually contain a fair bit of road there might be some aero advantage..?

Cheers

The "benefits" aren't worth it for me - revs haven't suffered fatigue breakages for me.

I doubt any aero advantage is significant, the air will be totally chopped up by your big fat greek knobbly tyres.

I would say 3x all round... but I have a set of Stans built Podium/AC wheels and they have been superb. They are as you say above, 2x front and NDS and 1x DS.

Not had to touch the spokes at all in just over a year of tough racing.
They are the super skinny rev spokes as well, 1.8-2.0? I had my concerns about them, but again unfounded.

If you can afford bladed spokes then go for it, but personally I'd never bother as I haven't had a problem with revolution spokes in over 5 years of using them.
