Lights winter 2023 thread?

I've not found one on here using the search bar, so might as well start one.

My helmet light, a Moon Vortex 1300, packed up earlier this week after one too many tree branch interfaces. Now it strobes when I try and charge it.

I'm looking at the same again (as 1300 lumens for £30 is fantastic value) or the Moon Meteor Storm Pro, which is about 40g heavier and £25 more but looks promising.

I would go out and get another Exposure (there's a Maxx D on the bars and an old 1000 lumen joystick with a knackered battery in my parts drawer) but I rinsed bike to work already.

Anyone have any other suggestions for lid lights?

It’s worth checking the Singletrack rewards program for Exposure lights

Oooh - excellent call, @P20. There is a very chonky discount via the Member Reward section - if I get a Diablo, the discount is more than my annual membership.

and/or send the joystick back to Exposure for a refurb?   Part of the point of buying them, isn't it?

I hear you. Battery replacement via Exposure is / was £80 last time I checked. I'd bought the Moon because it takes 18650s - of which I have an absolute ton lying around. This would let me use it for quite long rides with multiple battery swaps. Unfortunately, it's a proprietary battery the same size  as an 18650 - the poles are both at the same end. Quite annoying.

The Exposure has plenty of life left in it, so I have a bar mount shoe so I can run it on my bikes when I'm just going from A to B without incinerating oncoming traffic's eyeballs.

After years of using shonky Chinese lights last year I picked up a Diablo for my lid. This then made the remaining Chinese bar light look piss poor so when I got a good offer in a Hope R+ it was a no brainer. Actually looking forward to some night rides once this weather does one.

I have an original Troute light I'm thinking of making a new 14.8v battery pack for (got him to custom make it to match my original pack).  Obviously I'll need to get 4 18650s.

Wondering if there's anything better than the original 6x Cree XPGs that would make it worth spending a bit extra? Probably looking for similar light but more efficient/longer running.

I'm quite attached to it to be honest!

I've a lumenator that I'm sending back to smudge for an overhaul with new optics and LEDs

Got a moon meteor storm lite on the road/gravel bike (1300l)

Moon meteor storm for the MTB (1750l)

And a 1000l joystick mk12 carbon for the helmet

If the lumenator is upgraded to 2000l or so I'll stick that on the GoPro helmet mount for longer moorland night rides I think

I've faffed with quite a few lights.

Current favourite combo is a lifeline Pavo 2500 on the bars and a magicshine rn1500 on the helmet using a knog helmet mount.

Pavo from tweeks for 120
Rn1500 from AliExpress circa 40 quid
Knog helmet mount circa 10 quid

Nice beam patterns and the led colour/hue on mine match almost perfectly.

@bentudder I would look at contacting Exposure again, I have just had a light repaired by them for a very good price, about half what you are thinking it may be.

2011 1800lm six-pack on the bars
2017 1400lm diablo on my head.

Used most weeks. Most of my night rides are about 2h. I think about a brighter front light most winter, price a new six-pack, which would lead to a new head light and.... stick with what I've got.

I been thinking about a support cell for the diablo, but it's easier to just leave it on medium on the downs or turn it off completely on the ups.

On longer bike packing rides in the summer one or both has also been awesome.

On road rides starting in the dark, the diablo has also been awesome.

I'm pretty happy:-)

I didn't realise there was still some Troute users out there. I've got a Darkness dominator lying around here somewhere but the self contained light has won me over. For light output it's still but best I've ever used which is impressive as it's a few years old now 2600 lumens I think it was? My outbound lighting Evo might not be quite as bright but it's beam pattern is amazing. Annoyingly expensive with importing from the states but might well be worth it.

Anyone using the Hope R4+? Reviews seem to rate the quality but say its a bit underpowered. Looking for a bar light to compliment a Diablo on the lid and don't feel like I need a 12000 lumen beast. Budget ideally sub £200 but its got to be suitable for the Puffer at the same time...

Yep, with a Joystick on my lid.

Works fine for me and my eyes aren't great in the dark. No, it's not THE brightest light out there, but you can't fault the quality. Mine is well over 5 years old, so don't know if they are now using improved LED's

I’m loving still my Troute light 2000lm 10 year old lamp.

troute was a cracking guy who hand built mine along with so many others.

Meeting up at his workshop was one of those special moments when workmanship shone …

Can’t see a Joystick battery replacement being £80. Perhaps that’s worst-case with a big light like a 6-pack needing all of its cells changed. I had an old Diablo repaired by Exposure (a few years ago admittedly)for <£20. Only one cell needed replacement. Def worth asking.

You can on the mtb batteries site buy a new joystick battery for 17 quid if you can solder two wires its bigger capacity than standard too

Four 4ths scorch as a helmet lamp and Gloworm X2 on the bars - tempted go go for an all on one option on the bars but exposure still looks a bit pricey. Wish I hadn't sold my Troutlight though - as good as the Gloworm X2 is it's not a patch on the Troutlight!

Very similar to me, I have a four4th omg on the lid and gloworm on the bars.
Plenty of light to run on low most of the time and medium to high if it gets a bit more technical

Just bought an Exposure Maxx D Mk13 for £231 from the outlet with STW members discount (-£58). Will see how much better it is than the Hope it is next week

Speaking of cheap lights, any recommendations for a F+R set for my boys?
Don't need to be trail ready just something relatively cheap and cheerful to keep them safe riding home at night!

My Maxx D turned up today.

What a lovely bit of kit.

But what happened with the handlebar clamp - was it designed on a Friday afternoon after a pub lunch?
