Mostly for walking - woods, moorland etc with the kids - can this be beaten for price/perfomance?

probably worn with a baselayer and light mid layer

I've had that jacket for a few years and I'm pleased with it. I wouldn't say its lightweight, but reassuringly mid-weight! That said it has a reasonable pack size.

Its never leaked, and has loads of pockets.

The only downsides are - The cuffs are quite wide, but I have dainty wrists. The zip doesn't have a pullet at the bottom to allow for 2 way venting, and the hood peak isn't great, but if you wear a cap underneath its fine, even without it will do.

I have one of the Montane Rain Pac Pro jackets as well, definitely lightweight, Gore-tex paclite. Bought as a packaway jacket for summer breaks but I expect it will be fine in winter. Hood is a bit minimal but well made. The Quechua jacket is much tougher and warmer, qu'el surprise.

I was gonna ask for a summary, but I've found a comprehensive review online by our very own badlywireddog 😀

Maybe it's finally time to retire my nearly 30-year-old Mountain Equipment Denali.

Do you have one Matt? How's the sizing? I like a roomy jacket that covers my arse fully.

Ahh. TBF I did put it out as a PSA on here 24 hours earlier when I ordered one.
Can't say how it fits - it's both not here yet and for one of my sons...

I've one of these https://www.gaynors.co.uk/mens-c4/waterproof-gore-tex-jackets-c1222/mens-mera-peak-5-0-jacket-p3667 which has been barely used ie as new, size medium if you're interested. £80?

Maybe this thread answers what I'm asking here
https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/alpkit-argonaut-keep-or-return/

Reviews say the Argonaut is great value.... but those don't account for huge discounts that can be found while shopping around
