My MCE 5-mode weighs about the same (including cell) as just the lamp unit of the 1200 lumen one (with seperate 4x18650 pack). But its a lot less noticeable, probably because its got a proper mount. Its got a hell of a throw the 1200 lumen one, perfect for a helmet mount.

Well I thought Takisawa was maybe exaggerating a tad as I've used both type on my helmet...
I've two P7 torches that weigh, 165g and 180g respectively with batteries (his maybe a smaller unit again though).
Compared to the weight of my Magicshine P7 head unit which weigh 100g, & my MTB Batteries XM-L head unit @ 120g, it's not that far off the mark .

I questioned it, as I noticed the weight of the 'normal' torches but not the MS units, though they were mounted a different location on the helmet, which may have contributed (MS unit @ the front, 'normal' torches at the rear).

Though as you can get XML torches now for less than £20 weighing 163g aprox (though you still need to sort a mount), as much as the Diablo looks great and weigh only 110g, is it worth £150 (aprox) more?

TBH one of my m8's thought so lately, but then he free and single, and likes quality bits of kit. He's the only one though, 8 or more others bought P7's, couple even sold their Exposures lights...

ahaa TBH I was quoting Stoners review weight (see 1st link), which is probably torch (112g) + the battery....

Trout used to do a diy kit, 900 lm. Have a look at his profile

z1ppy: That torch seems excellent value, any idea on the run times? Seems to come with 2 batteries but only needs 1 at a time. Are these the sort I keep reading about where you should charge them somewhere safe or watch them all the time as some have caught fire (define some heh) ?

I'd just go with the £20 one. a 200g torch is barely noticeable as long as your helmet fits well and you mount it as low as possible.

Is nt it normally the battery that the heavy anyhow ?

One of my P7 type torches is a bit heavy but the other weights nothing with out the battery.

However it tends to get a bit hot unless its cold outside. You might not want something really hot on your head.

So presumably the lightest torch will have no heat sink and little battery life.

Personally I dont think you need 1200 lumens on your head. Although obviously the day will come when there'll be no point not have that much.

there's a reason helmets are light, and you're doubling the weight

I can't tell you as it was Stoners review not mine, your missing my subtle link to the review:
http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/ebay-cree-xml-20-torch-out-of-the-box-pics-review
I already have a profusion of torches and am trying to hold off buying any more... even as a 'spare'!
For comparison my P7 torches would last 1.5hrs easily on one of those batteries, easily much longer as I bought 5 modes unit, and use the lower mid modes for canal or road sections. Changing batteries is a 1 minute affair, and I have a big pack, so don't worry about carrying an extra battery or two...
I find it strange that Stoners only getting aprox 1hr 10 in his review, as the XM-L led is a more efficent unit (should last longer!), so either his batteries need 'running in' or there not the best quality (quite likely considering the overall unit price)...
Isnt it normally the battery that the heavy anyhow ?

18685 battery is 45g according to my digi scales, which confirms what Stoners review says.
Personally I dont think you need 1200 lumens on your head. Although obviously the day will come when there'll be no point not have that much.

Aren't we already there? £20 for a theoretical 1200 lumens.. in real life probably 900 lumens
But isn't it ace to have option so cheaply?
and finally as always you get the
Are these the sort I keep reading about where you should charge them somewhere safe or watch them all the time as some have caught fire (define some heh) ?

There was a huge and I mean huge thread on MTBR about the Magicshine P7 bike light chargers catching fire... and out of all the 1000's of posts only 2 ppl actually reported their charger catching fire...
I'm not saying you no more likely to recieve a faulty unit or that anyone has even had issues, when buying so cheap, but with a bit of thought (monitoring the charger, charging in a safe place) you can avoid these potential issues. Though the reports I've seen about the issue, say they tend to 'fuse' in the first useage..
Personnaly I have three DX 'chinese type chargers, and am perfectly happy to leave them on all night in my house without fear of it burning down around us (or hasn't yet, in the last 4 years since I bought my 1st one).

I don't go on mtbr but had a cheap DX charger go bang and catch fire (bought around the time the first cheap DX P7 torches were available) . replaced with a decent one (recommended here) and it's been fine so far (well over 2 years I think)

Cruz, what about it?
Other than it's the 'older' P7 LED, and not the newer brighter XM-L.
TBH it look exactly the same (other than the camo) as one of my P7's that weighs 165g.

90g, yes very light indeed & that a bunny (Oolong) with a pancake on it's head.

I've no experience of it, so obviously can't tell you any more about it...
Of my two P7's, one is shaped like that and the other as per this link and the later produced the output shape and depth (weigh's 180g with battery in my case)...
