I'm going to re-build my Dialled BIkes Holeshot soon and will be fitting a chain device but I wasn't that impressed with the previous one (a Blackspire one) as it was quite draggy.

Does anyone have any suggestion for the best method of retaining the chain with out incurring loads of drag (other than singlespeeding it)?

I'l be running it 1x9 with a 36 tooth chainring at the front.

Your advice is appreciated.

a Blackspire Stinger is fairly undraggy as it's just the lower roller and no top roller or guide or inner plate
with a dual ring one there's only one side to the roller next to the chain, meaning even less drag

most chain devices that use a lower roller can feel 'draggy' when the chain is under tension by the mech (like when your in the lowest gear at the back) but as brakes said the stinger shouldnt have been any worse than MRP/E13/raceface/DMR etc. If you really want a low friction one then get just fit a bash and a top guide as this will hold the chain on 90% as well with no extra drag at all. For more security you can fit a bash style guide on the inside of your chainring too (assuming you have room), like this (or get an MRP system 1 and not fit the lower roller). Personally tho id just put up with it for the added security.

Have tried a few chain devices in the past, certainly my MRP felt less draggy than most.

Don't know whether it actually was or not, but it has always felt reasonably drag free.

Though if you want the benefits of a chain device, a little bit of drag in the drivetrain is only a small price to pay IMO.
