Anyone fancy going to the Bolehills and finding someone who can show us ground huggers how to get air (dude)?
yeh.. that would be fun.. loads of guys in the area who ride there regular like.. I'm sure they would help out.. post on Gravity Slaves, or Made in Sheffield
As the OP of that thread, I certainly need some help and would be in
Any volunteer teachers?
I used to be able to jump some of Bolehills on my bmx but its been many years
I'm sure a couple of the guys at our place would be happy to show you how to jump for the cost of a beer (or, probably a milkshake in Joe's case)....
I'll be sure to add a jumping clinic to our skills days early next year too!
I'll have a word with the guys tomorrow....see who's keen....

I'd come down from leeds as well - anything to get more than 1" from the ground!!
post pics 🙂
Bike tree skills days... sounds good
Scott, I'm sure we'd send some beers your way!
post pics
also post X-rays.
is there a date in mind?
anything to get more than 1" from the ground!!
Thats the easy part, its the flight and the landing bit thats the problem!!
Can we make it after Christmas when my bike is finished please lol.

i live next to Bolehills, i'd be delighted to help if i can.
just let me know.
dude.
maybe one of my riders would join you and pass on my advice? 🙂
ah wiles - thanks! What date can people do then? When's the Bolehills busy?
I haven't taken a bike to the Bolehills since my kids humiliated me when they were about 8-9.
I don't think Bolehills is ever busy other than race days.
Middle of summer school holidays and I had it all to my self for a good few hours
No specific dates in mind yet, but sure to be some skills days planned for early next year (we've been meaning to get around to it since we opened....it WILL happen!)...
I'll have a word with the guys tomorrow....
Jedi....not sure there are enough places around Sheffield to master the art of the 'huck to flat'... :D.......sure we could find some dark peak step-downs though!!
huck to flat?
I used to live just near Bolehills. Even though I'd say I can jump, Bolehills was still a daunting place. As beginners, I'd be looking to start somewhere a touch easier... Book a weekend at Glentress and spend it in the freeride park. Perfect for getting used to it from small to big.
There's probably places closer to Sheffield but I never found any where to rival Glentress for the purpose. And it feels like a holiday!
apparently this is a good example - you might need to click off the ad at the start

I'll come and play too if it isn't this weekend. Wedding in Cambridge to attend on Sat. Can make it down next week and over most of Christmas.
I'm also next door to bolehills, and would happily help out.... a bit rusty at the jumps at the moment (done a lot more fell running than riding for the last year or 2) but more than happy to lend a hand and give a few pointers
so how did it go? has it happened?
it's worth saying that the track will run a bit slow if it's wet/frozen.
and i predict that for the next 3 months it will be wet and or frozen.
tyres are tyres, but something fast rolling like holy-rollers or Larsens, pumped up to around 60psi will save you a lot of energy.
I may be tempted too, depending when it is.
If I chicken out on the jumps I might just come along and take pics. 🙂
being scared of jumps is fine.
but there's still heaps to learn about pumping and manuals.
stop s****ing.
Last time i rode at Bolehills (summer about two years ago) i overshot the first big double on the back straight, landed on my coccyx and couldn't sit down for about a fortnight. Scared myself off going again.
Finbar BH has changed quite a bit since then the back straight is bigger and has an extra double.
There has been some work on the pump track too.
I have been twice this year and had "The Fear" on the back straight so havn't jumped it yet.
I will do it at some point I just need to ride there more.
I couldn't help but notice the last time I walked through a few weeks ago that the slightly older kids, 12-13, all have fancy jump bikes or what looked like 4x bikes instead of the cheap bmxers my little dears used to race up there. There must be some generous parents out there.
You can't buy skill, or at least I've not found a shop selling it.
Shall we get a date in the new year then? Maybe a saturday?
saturdays are good but would it not be best to wait for the bike tree? or are we doing this independent?
My name is slowrider and I need help jumping too
What about the 15th?
Stick your hand up and say whether you're a teacher or pupil:
ourkidsam, definitely a pupil!
Hi,
WE ran a Jump & Pump Skills course there for some CTC staff and locals a few months back, Problem with weekends is it can get busy obviously. We used the Bowing Club up the hill as a classroom for lunch and to show coaching vid's from the course ECT. Had a good day with everyone and got most people in the air too!
Jedi, fancy running a course together there?
Bob
Good idea, but rather than build it up to a big initimidating jump session with expectations, to start with, why not just head up and have a look at the jumps, check the lie of the land, watch the locals on the back straight and ride the pump track? Concentrate on flowing over the humps and getting the feeling of the bike unweighting before building up speed.
It's not the best track to learn to jump on, lots of jumps are technical and/or committed - I prefer Wincobank or Staveley.

Locals (well, local and former local!):
Anything involving a classroom and booking someone to drive up and coatch us sounds far too serious for me.
I was thinking a few hours larking about then the pub
^ this
^ this +1.
a group of like minded riders all trying something new is so cool! 🙂
^ Awesome! ...so THAT'S what jumping is!
That's my local pump track!! and I feel well chuffed with myself when I can get all the way round at a depressingly slow speed without my wheels ever leaving the ground. 😛 I typically have groms whizzing by me and various sphincter clenching moments as the rear wheel goes unintentionally airborne over the humpy bits.
I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's great fun! I think my somewhat fascistically jay approach to saddle height may be hindering me though. 😕
Right, I think a Bolehills jump and pub ride is in order. It'll be the shortest STW group ride ever
Yay. What Podge says. 🙂
Cool, I'll get my organising hat on and see what I can come up with
cool, count me in, i'm the first rider out in the youtube vid and i need all the help i can get!
We tried to get Will to enter this years pumptrack comp but he wimped out.
