Just looking at the os map for future rides. Does anyone know what the bridleways around the other borrowdale (over towards staveley, the shap fells) are like.
I'm looking at breasthigh rd, bretherdale, birkbeck fells common etc'. Is there any good riding over there or is it boggy slogs? I like the sound of "thunder stone!"
BOG AVOID unless you have a fattie
Nice one, that's cleared that up then!
I've done Borrowdale - Bretherdale - Breasthigh. Apart from Breasthigh it's all very tame, the BW on the north bank of the Borrowdale beck doesn't appear to exist on the ground, part of the top end is in the beck! Breasthigh is a steep climb, a bit of flat along the top and a steep descent.

Not done the BW over Roundthwaite Common.
The BW from the A6 into Bretherdale looks hard work:

The next BW north across Birkbeck Fells Common looks similar.
Not been on either of the latter two but are probably what Rich is referring to.
whoops got my areas mixed up !! the bits that whitestone have done are fine and as described we ride them several times a year usually during the night.
Rode a loop last week which took in all of Borrowdale, Breasthigh Road and around Orton.
Borrowdale was lovely, like being in a remote Scottish Glen. Breasthigh Road was ok, great bumpy rocky blast down into Bretherdale Head, then after that most of the BW's were hard work and boggy. Looks like they are pretty seldom used.
Great ride for getting a bit of solitude. I didn't see another soul all ride.
