Hi
I have a Kona Unit X 2020 it’s great but am doing more trail riding then I at first thought I would, and so am keen to upgrade fork to an air fork so can ride a bit more aggressively, small drops, small jumps etc. Does anyone know what length travel I can get with that geometry bike that would ride well ? And maybe a suggestion for a mid priced fork ? Thank you
Not sure about a mid-priced fork, but geometry wise I'd probably go 100mm on the Unit, possibly 120mm
A 100mm fork would put the head angle at about 66 deg, seat angle at 73deg and bb drop at about 55mm
A 120mm fork would put these at 65 deg, 72 deg and 50mm
I run 100mm on my older model which is a degree slacker in sta & steeper ha than yours
Mine needed an external lower cup which increased stack height & slackened things a bit more too
I tried it on 120 and it was good, but lifted a bit on climbs
It rides great at 100mm 😁

If you consider a sagged fork (as you're riding it) - the angles aren't affected as much as that. stock fork is 470mm, a 120mm pike is 531mm unsagged, or 490mm sagged @ 30%. 20mm increase in a2c would change the angles by approx 1 deg (so 67 head angle and 74deg seat).
I'd stick to a 120mm (maybe 130mm) fork anyway..
Measure the current fork A-C, replace with one the same (or not much more).

Ya this is a good point, I gave unsagged numbers so you can compare with other bike's geometry, which are normally quoted without sag.
As it happens my numbers for a 100mm fork weren't far off anyway as you have to add an external headset like someone else said, which adds close to another 15mm I think?
heres mine

I have a 100mm fork on my 18 unit. Coupled with a external headset it relaxed the geometry more than I wanted but rides fine off road but feels a little wandery on the seal. I wouldn't recommend going more than 100mm.
Hey thanks for your help you guys ! Yes I have subsequently read in a Unit X 2020 ride review that 100mm works well, 120 can be fine too but ‘perhaps not as nimble cornering’.
Still slightly undecided - hmmm
If you want to sell the rigid forks, pm me...
120mm Pike here on a 2019 UnitX. Rides brilliantly!
What you waiting for? 😁
Such versatile frames.
