I've used XTR chains on my bikes for years without any problems, but put an SRAM one on and it's just failed. Not where it was split either. Hasn't had that much use so won't be going for another one. So stick with XTR or the KMC?
Campag Record C9 for 9sp drivetrain, best chain ever ever ever! Just bedding in when the others are wearing out! Haven't used anything else for racing/training since trying one over 2 years ago. Can't recommend enough.
Even having switched to XX drivetrain, I ditched the SRAM 1090R and changed to the Campag Record C10 (10sp version) and it's miles better.

I had similar problems with Sram went to a KMC about 6 months ago and it's been very good. I think it's an X9.
*tut*
stephen_james, you've been a lurker for long enough to know the rules for these threads:
at least ten rounds of shimano - SRAM - shimano - SRAM - shimano must elapse before anyone reads the OP and comments on KMC
possibly after that you and your filthy maverick roadie ways might creep in
(oh, and welcome ๐ )
I also don't like SRAM chains. KMC or Campag for me too!

BAH !
OK, if we're flouting the rules and wheeling out the unconventional early on:

Odd, I've been using Pc-991 cross step for as long as I can remeber and using Sedis chains before that and never had an issue. I certainly prefer SRAM to Shimano, they seem to wear too quickley for my liking.
Hadn't considered Campag. Are they their own thing now? From memory they were posh sedis - though I'm talking a few years back
Yikes, cheers!!
I'll get back to watching 1st practice at Spa.....oh, I mean work.
kmc x9l last age's and can be had very cheap

X9SLs wear out very quickly though IME, so if weight's not a priority go with the X9L.
i've never had an issue with sram chains..
though on my everyday bike I have used a Wippermann Connex and this does seem to be lasting longer in terms of wear
Wippermann do 9 and 10 speed chains.
The KMC X9.93 is fairly cheap and is well worth a try. I buy those or XTR, depending on what I can get cheapest at the time, and the only thing that would seperate the two is the better value of the KMC. The X-plate design of the KMC gives really clean shifts.
wasn't it rumored that Shimano chains are actually made by KMC?
As I understand it, KMC make Shimano chains apart from the XT and XTR, which are made by Shimano in Japan.
Curious, after a lifetime of KMC's, I've just switched to a Yumeya/XTR (with a KMC quick link). I'll give you a definitive answer in 12 months or so.
FWIW, I wouldn't touch SRAM chains or cassettes with a sh*tty stick.
I have the KMC SL on two bikes with their split link. They're lightweight and work great. I've had problems with shim chains in the past, though SRAM have always been fine spo maybe you just had a defective one if it expired so soon.
I will always buy KMC...until one breaks ๐
From what I remember of a conversation with a big German guy at a trade fair, KMC do make chains for other people. I think they make the lower-end Shimano and Campag chains. I think Ultegra, Dura-Ace, Record and Chorus chains are all made in-house but 105 and below are KMCs.
However, this was a couple of years ago and I can't really remember. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable may be along soon...

Shimano chain with a Sram powerlink is the mother lode for chains. For the price of the superlight KMC you could even go Yumeya.
And wot Jo@brooks said- 3 months out of a sram 970 cassette? Twice? WTF???
Never had a problem with SRAM.
Cheers guys I'll give the KMC a go
