yo, i need to get a new multitool for some longish rides coming up as i've lost the one i used to use. what do you folk recommend?

and that got me thinking, what do you take in your daypacks when you head for the hills? interested to get some suggestions that i might not consider. post your kitlists, and pics here!

My bag has a Park multi-tool, a spare tube (or two), a puncture repair kit, a little pair of pliers, a pump, a shock pump, a tinily-folded up foil blanket, water, food, clothing dependant on weather.

Cue usual arguments about usefulness of first aid kits...

multi tool
chaintool
power link/ spare links
brake pads
tubes
tyre patch (cut from milk bottle)
tyre levers
pump
shock pump (unless it's the rigid)
phone
food
water
maybe a gear hanger
money
waterproof
maybe more clothes

i reckon that'd cover most eventualities.

Crank Bros 19 tool multitool
tyre levers
Mini pump
shock pump
first aid kit (made up by me for typical mtb injuries rather than the usual piddly plasters)
Survival whistle
spare mech hanger
anchovies (the tyre repair kind), emrgency adhesive tyre boots x3, superglue, 60ml bottle of wheel milk
Phone
folded up £5
2 GO bars

If its a day ride, there'll be extra grub, a bivvy bag and an extra top. Maybe a bit of armour too, depending on the lairiness of the terrain.

Park or Crank Bros multi tools seem most popular? Any advice on specific multi-tools?

I'm pretty sure my kitlist is a little OTT, but here goes:

In my Camelbak Mule
First Aid Kit
Space Blanket
Pac-a-Mac
Survival Kit (sometimes)
Topeak Alien Multitool
Leatherman style tool
Spare brake pads
Cable ties
Spare Mech Hanger
Inner Tube
Park Tools Patches
Soma Tyre Levers
Pump
Co2 Inflator + 2 refils
Powerlinks
Superglue
Anti-Bacterial hand wash
Canon PowerShot G10 + SLR Gorillapod

A couple of gels, chocolate bars, maybe some sarnies.

I rarely take all of this kit, as it's hard to get into the mule! I have to take a lot of it though, cos the friends I cycle with take **** all!!

I keep my money & phone on me.

I think I remembered everything... Hold on, Sunglasses!

Milkie, the reason that your mates bring **** all is probably because they know you bail them out.

Bring only the kit you need. A proper walk off the hill while the rest of you finish the ride might make them get their shit together.

I'm all for lending pumps, inner tubes and what not once in a while, but not all the time thats just taking advantage of your good nature.

I have a:
Spesh Multi tool

3 CO2 Canisters and an adapter
Pump
Shock Pump
2 Tubes
Tyre levers
Spare pads for both X2's and M4's
Mech Hanger Turner & SC Superlight
Odd bolts, washers, etc.

Hip flask (with some single malt whisky)
Penknife
Sometimes a first aid kit
Often arm warmers
Sometimes leatherman
Keys
Occasionally cake!
Water

and yes - it does weigh a lot but I am seldom caught out and have only had to walk out of a ride once in 15 years.

Is a shock pump necessary ?. If your shock loses pressure, aren't the seals shot ?.

My pack for a 'big ride day' usually goes something like this -

Minipump
Shock pump
1x Tube
Repair kit
One spare valve inner (tubeless)
Valve core tool
3x Tyre levers
Insulation tape
Length off Gaffa
Handul of zipties
Spare chainlinks
Allen keys/multitool (with chaintool)
Combination plier
Spare inner cable
Cash
Spare hanger (Depends on the bike)
Small wipes (KFC)
Plasters
Bit of string
Couple of M4, M5 bolts.
Spare set of cleats
Spare pads

Sounds a lot. But its not really, everyhting bar the pumps fits into an old goggle bag. Rest of pack is made up of food/water/clothing that obviously is dependent on weather and length of ride.

Amazing how many people are not carrying a spare inner cable - they weigh next to jack all...

Oh, and as above, I have been known to take a very small stove and mugh with me on occasions. And keep it secret, until that moment when your huddling behind a wall while someone fixes a flat in the freezing cold in the arse end of nowwhere. always goes down well -

"Hang on, what the hell have you got there Snotrag"

" This? Oh, im just mashing up, its a bit chilly "

" **** "

For me just:

Crank Brothers multi tool
One tube
17MM spanner (bolt through rear end)
couple sram links
Zip ties
Pump - Insulation and Gaffa tape wrapped around it for bike/injury use.
Brake pads but only if riding in the Alps.
One large sterile bandage.

I don't see the point in a first aid kit. We've been able to bandage up a fully exposed elbow bone with a sterile bandage and gaffa tape. Any worse requires a rescue, anything less can be ignored.

My first aid kit is one I put together myself, I just happen to keep it in the original pack for visibility. Its full off large graze dressings, two sterile bandages, gauze, steri-strips and some tape.

All the piddly plasters and stuff in the off-the shelf number are a waste of time for MTB style injuries.

I'm with mrmo on this one, a wee seat pack with inner tube, CO2 thing, small Park Tool, SRAM chain link, tyre levers. In back pockets Pertex shell or waterproof, gel or bananna or jelly babies, phone and that's it for 90% of my riding if I am heading into the back of beyond I'll carry a wee pack with all the gubbins you lot carry.

Incidentally, I reckon I fall into the 'overpackers' camp of the STW massive.

stuff?

multitool (allen keys, screwdrivers, torq25, chain tool)
spare gear cable
zip ties
tube and patches
pump
food (not particularly planned)
bandages& plasters, (again, unplanned, just enough to wrap up something thats bleeding a little too badly, no point going overbord, if its that bad your going to need profesional help)
space blanket/sleep sack
money
phone etc

Nothing special in there, 99% of riding in this country isn't remote enough to warrent full on survival kit!

Multitool, patches, powerlinks, at least one spare tube, pump (and none of your tiny pocket pumps, a proper big un that'll actually inflate a tyre before nightfall), waterproof, my "soft shell" which is a cheap Mountain Warehouse fleece with the lower arms cut off...

Couple of big sticky plasters and some painkillers (got a couple of tramadol in there, in case I ever want to walk off a hill with a broken foot or something), phone and money. Oh and headphones for the phone.

Plus loads and loads of food, I like to eat as I ride. Clif Shots, energy bars, gels, dextrose tablets. Oh, and if I'm anywhere remote a foil blanket, good for keeping warm but better for signalling help.

wow!! serious lists, and when we ride out for days touring ours can look like these lists, but when out normally I try to keep to one small tool 9 bits? (Topek Mini)... one tube, Park patches and a mini pump. If I can they go under the seat (tubes + patches) tool in a pocket, pump on the frame. If its a long run and wet maybe a really small bottle of oil / mini first aid kit / food / extra layer. Touch wood - I have been riding off road for years 2-5 times a week and never needed more.
Though sprog James races DH - and they go for 2-3 min runs each time maybe 8-10 in a day and can need a estate boot-full of tools and spares to keep him going.

Blimey, makes my kit list seem undernourished;

2 tubes, multitool, pump, tyre lever. couple of bolts and bits in a plastic bag. couple of cliff bars, maybe a jacket if the weather's bad...

Smoke grenades are great for a quick getaway but they do weigh a bit. I'm thinking of investing in a Bat Man belt.
