Hi, which of the 2 options would you choose?:
- Front: Magic Mary UltraSoft
- Rear: Hans Dampf Soft
- Front: Hellkat Pro
- Rear: Helldiver Pro / Hellkat Pro
Thanks.
For what? That is the bigger question
For a mud terrain currently. After, for a loose terrain
Any suggestions? :P.
Up.
Where are you riding and what sort of trails? Mud terrain isn’t very descriptive when it comes to MTB trails. Personally I can’t comment on the Kenda just year (will be trying soon as heard great things) but can on Mary and Dampf. I find it a great alround combo, but it depends massively on where you ride!!
Is for a short trails Enduro.
THink you are missing the point here buddy. Mud, short and Enduro doesn't really say what type of terrain you are riding. Where in the UK are you riding mostly? Are you racing Enduro? if so what series would be a clue? For me the Magic Mary is the best all round front tyre. I pair it with either a Hans Dampf and Rock Razor. But I do find the HD packs up on some of the sticky forest mud trails i ride in the FOD. Mainly when yo cant get enough speed to clear it. My tyre OCD wont allow me to run two different tyre makes so i find its the best compromise.
Magic Mary supergravity vertstar is my go to front tyre, Awesome tyre for natural stuff, though I know of more than a few folks that are enjoying a cut down Dirty Dan, which I'd like to try.
How rooty is it? Because I'd rather slide around in mud, than slide around on roots (on the Magic Mary).
Magic mary is pretty good on wet roots?? In my experience and you dont get much damper and rootier than the FOD!
I can't say I've noticed the Mary struggling on roots, if that's what you mean?.
That was what i was trying to say, got my ?? confused with !!. For me the Mary is the best all year round front tyre. 90% of my riding is wet roots!
Sorry Russy, meant if that's what raybanwomble was implying!
Then, no one tried the Hellkat?

Don't agree at all and there are a few reviewers about who don't like mid-sprikes on roots, I find them deflecty and less forgiving of being leant over on the outer tread due to the angled tread pattern - with a tendency to very abruptly lose traction. I find lower profile centre treads much easier to cope with on roots. I have found the TRSr's to be the best sticking to roots.
I would suggest if you ride where I do the Mary is probably the most common front tyre. You don’t get much rootier than the FOD.
I'm not saying it isn't the most popular, I am saying that there are definately tyres that are better suited to roots and that I personally find tyres like the HRII and TRSr much more predictable on them - and I'm willing to trade that for all but the slipperiest of mud conditions. In which case I'll be running proper spikes anyway. I would choose either of those tyres at Revs over the Mary and especially the updated TRSr when it becomes available.
My old capra came with HR2 front and rear, dreadful lack of bite up front, draggier than rupaul on the rear. Lasted less than a month, just goes to show tyres are like saddles, we're all different. 😁
It's 2018, nobody's going to recommend a Kenda even if it's the best tyre in the world.
Can't speak for the Addix versions but I prefer the mighty 2.5 Shorty to the previous Magic Mary models, it's like voodoo in Unknown Territory- you know, that mushy stuff that might just be mud but actually might have a root running right across it that you can't see, or a big smooth rock just under the surface, or a chunk of ice, or some weird special mud with the exact consistency of potted meat, or equally might be rock solid and perfect. That mystery stuff mince baby mince is made of just after snow melt. The Mary's good but it's never given me that "hold my pint" feeling.
I'll be trying a Hellkat at some point. Probably as a lighter weight summer tyre.
Currently running a Hutchinson Toro which I'd thoroughly recommend for loose, muddy conditions. Seems to hold lines at least as well as others riding the MM. Admittedly they probably aren't running the SG but then it'll wear a lot better too.
Plenty of top options out there that aren't Schwalbe or Maxxis.
Another one I'd be looking at for winter is the Spesh Hillbilly which is finally available in 27.5.
Oh I don't think the HD is particularly good as a winter rear. Decent when upright but lacks in cornering traction. Something with a Minion style tread is much preferred with options such as Bonty SE5 or Spesh Butcher.
