[Closed] Juicy 3 Calliper - are new seals always required?

Hi,

One of the pistons in my front Juicy 3 calliper is sticking. I've moved it in and out and lubed with brake fluid but its still stiff. If I strip the calliper and remove the pistons will the seals be destroyed and need replacing? I want to try and avoid buying expensive Avid spare parts.

Cheers

I've know dirt to build up inside the seal aperture in the piston bore. The seal will obviously need to come out. Unless you set about them with pliers or screwdriver, I don't see how you're going to damage the pistons.

I was going to 'carefully' force the pistons out with an air compressor. Will the process of removing the pistons destroy the seals?

I've known seals stop working after having removed the pistons; but I've also been able to cure stuck pistons by dismantling and rebuilding them. It's highly unlikely that you'll destroy them - as in that they'll fail completely and leak fluid - so the worst-case scenario is really that you still have a sticky piston.

Worst case scenario is more likely to be the sticking being caused by a build up of corrosion in the seal grooves, unlikely on a recent caliper but older ones can be rendered as scrap by this.Got nowt to lose by stripping it though, a good clean out and lube with silicone grease usually works wonders.
