Hello all.

I'm trying to remove the rear Juicy 3 brake from my bike as they're going on my girlfriend. I need to remove all parts down to the cable as the hose guides are solid and I'll need to thread just the hose through.

I've removed the lever so am looking at the compression bolt but that's as far as I've got. How does this come off?

They're 2007 brakes so different to the more modern versions that are shown in the online manuals. The modern version suggests the bolt should just slide off but mine won't budge. There looks to be a star nut fitting in the hose it self. Do I need to remove this with a star nut tool or should it come apart without?

Don't really want to spend much on tools, kits etc as I think Juicy 3's are pretty mince so would just upgrade instead but if there's an easy fix your help would be super!

I think you need the tool for that. Been a while since I bothered faffing with Juicys (I binned mine in the end) but I'm pretty sure you unscrew the barb with a Torx key, T10 I think. You might be able to get away with a small hex key though.

You put Avid brakes ON your girlfriend? Be a gent and fit her with Shimano's, you know it makes sense!

At least that way you can fit new seals when they get all slack and baggy.... ๐Ÿ˜†

You'll need a new olive(will probably come with a barb too), and a bleed kit. Unscrew the compression nut from the lever, pull the hose out, cut the end off, remove compression nut(very important unless you want to pull it all back out when you notice it sitting next to the caliper)fit to new bike, cut to correct length, fit nut/olive/barb, tighten into lever and bleed.

I'm not sure that you do need to buy a new olive, I definitely shortened the hoses on my Juicys and I don't recall getting new olives and barbs to do that so I must have reused the old ones. Just be careful taking them off the hoses in the first place. You will need a bleed kit though, Avids need syringes with special brass collar thingys that screw into the bleed ports. You can get cheaper knock offs on eBay that are supposed to do the job. You'll definitely need a T10 Torx key too, to get the bleed ports open as well as to refit the barb and olive.

Good luck!
