Putoline motocross chain wax - by far the best I have tried. lube every few hundred miles, chain life increased dramatically

finish line wet lube for me most of the time (green lid). Tried some fenwicks stuff a while back which isn't that great in comparison.

Still using B&Q Chainsaw oil - proberbly out of habit by now. ( Not the biodegradable stuff which seemed to turn somehow "resinous" if left for a week before use) - kit lasts me just as long as the greenline wet lube & costs very little.

...Having said that, was just pondering on the lube front as I've just come in this minute from fitting a new drive set to my bike. ( crankset, BB,chain & cass).

What is the stuff the manufacturers apply to the chain before you buy it ? - Is it a bonafide lube in it's own right or just some kind of gunk to stop it rusting ?

some manufacturers its lube some it is not. I think on Sram it is lube and it certainly works well - nearly as good as the putoline

Was using Finish Line Wet but now Squirt. I didn't think there'd be any difference in the shifting but it is a lot better and the chain/cassette/chain rings haven't been picking up as much gunk.

I liked Squirt until I tried it for several consecutive 50km days in the highlands with bothy/tent stops each night.

It doesn't last much more than 50km, even if, as in my case, you walked half of that. Whats more, its very hard to apply well in damp conditions, such as a cold bothy or worse, sitting outside overnight.

Plus if it wears off during the ride, you need to stop for at least half an hour to re-apply and let dry.

Great lube for sub 50km/dry rides, not for scottish touring though!

Back to the finish line...

got to agree about the longevity of squirt ๐Ÿ™
40 miles yesterday and the chain started squeaking at 30 miles, this was on a chain lubed and ridden, cleaned with a stiff brush as per instructions, and re lubed with squirt (allowed to dry over night) on 4 occasions.
When it is working its ace but it gives up around 30ish miles ime

i used to like clean streak, which was a wax based lube that was separated in the bottle and you had to shake it to mix it. Can't seem to find it anywhere now....

Apparently purple extreme is really good, i'm on for getting the ceramic juice to run with my ti-ni coated chain for uber shifting!

I agree with 13thfloormonk.

Squirt kept my chain looking lovely, but didn't lube much above 50k.

I've had different experiences with Putoline chain wax than TJ, and found I didn't get 100's of kilometers - probably about 100 or so, and in the wet I found it no better that finishline green. I moved away from it due to the hassle of application. - If it lasted for me like it has for TJ I'd probably still be using it

I've found the most important factor for extended chain life is chain cleanliness, and re-lubrication, irrespective of lubricant.
