... off-the-peg fully rigid xc singlespeed with mechanical disc brakes and not too racey angles i.e. a 68 degree HA or similar, that can also take some abuse?

Why not start with a summer season chassis (67.5deg)

for £600 but get O-O to swap the Argyles out for some Carbons (or Cromos) and get their SS converter kit spec the rest from merlin. PoP.
