Surely it's only a sport if you're competing? In which case that rules out the majority of the UK mountain bike population.

Motocross and enduro make mtb look like an indoor sport.

i don't think a sport necessarily has to be competitive. dictionary.com says: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. often competitive, but doesn't have to be.

i guess that most people don't see it as a sport or training as you would say footy practice or a sunday afternoon football match. just not a traditional sport - man vs. nature instead of man vs. man vs. time perhaps. competitive in a different way?

I have argued for a while now that the competitive element of sport is actually destructive for many ordinarily able people, putting them off partaking because they know they'll be so effectively outshone ๐Ÿ™ I favour instead cooperative effort.

Druidh is right. Mountainbiking is a pastime unless you are competing. A sport must have a competitive element with winners and losers

You're one of those killjoys that has ruined school sports days, aren't you? ๐Ÿ™
No winners any more - bloody pathetic it is & it's all your fault ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dunno how you worked that one out Bregante seeing as the RL nancy boys switched to the summer because it was too wet, cold and muddy in the winter! And before you get on your flat capped high horse, save it, I'm Scottish, couldn't give a toss about what the RFU did way back when and I play(ed) both codes.

Dont know about you lot but there's always a competitive element when I bike with mates, who can get up the hill first, who can get down the hill first, who can do the biggest drop.

I dont care what it's classed as, and I hate organised competitive sports because there's always someone who can dedicate more time than you.

No. Do you have to be 13 to enjoy friendly rivalry?

A trifle unfair that Druidh I feel. I dunno who you have ridden with all your life but just about every club ride I go on there is an element of this. It's natural to be competitive. I'm guessing you've never been in the military where every activity becomes a point scoring exercise to the point where going skiing with your work and rugby mates becomes down right dangerous!

fun, excitement, companionship, exhaustion etc ??

it's possible to do the same things but in a spirit of personal challenge rather than competition

Yes, but that's for riding alone, not riding in groups. Groups are a social event (for me at least).

It is a sport... Look in the f'ing dictionary and read the definition. And being sompetetive is for me a key part of it... If you didnt allways want to be that bit quicker than the people you ride with, no one would get better.

Are you being serious? The only reason to improve is to be better than your "mates"?

not true

I've got miles better over the last few years - 95% of my rides are solo & non of the rides with others have been competitive at all

Without a system of scoring it is not a sport - it remains a pastime.

IMO a sport requires two things - some form of athletic endeavour and a scoring system where you get winners and losers.
