In the grand scheme of things 1.5kg isn't that heavy unless all your other kit is weightweenied I wouldn't worry, you may shave off a few 100g but will end up paying a lot more.
what tent btw ? I still use a 10 year old Vango Zephyr2, weighs about that but works just fine and plenty of room.
Can also use it as flysheet only and save about 600g if I want to go fast'n'light 🙂

it'll take up a damn sight more room then water though

it's not light, but if your happy to carry it then it'll be fine.

load your bag/bike up and add a 1.5kilo amount of something of a similar bulk to try it, when bivying my tarp and bivy come in at about 700gish.
I'm big but no where as big as you I believe. when doing a mountain marathon or similar I use a terra nova laser comp @ <900g

surely it's not bivying if you're in a tent?

Its not really too heavy.
I usually use a North Face Tadpole, which weighs about 2kg. It is a 2 person tent, but I use it on my own.
Though I am carrying it in a trailer or in panniers, along with loads of other stuff anyway. It would be less comfortable in a rucksack.
And worth considering how bulky the tent is, and how you will pack it.

You'll be fine Tony. I was riding with a chap last week, his tent weighed 2.2kg, someone elses weighed under a kilo ... they both enjoyed themselves 😉

I recently did a 550 mile ride with 20kg of 'luggage', part of which was an old Vaude Hogan (not the Ultralight), weighing in at about 2.5kg. You don't notice the weight after a while.

The weight of a tent over a bivi + tarp is often worth it as you'll be able to get away with a lighter sleeping bag, especially if there's two of you in there. Plus you can cook, play cards, etc even if the weather's bad. I've enjoyed bivvying in nice weather as it makes me feel a bit like Ray Mears, but this Britain, so you can't really count on it...

all depends on where your going/what riding etc
a long tour with panniers and a bit more weight = no worries
if your trying to do some more exciting riding too then the weight can be annoying

If you want to shed weight you can just use the outer and full length rollmat.

the tent is a vango apex.
ordered it now, so gonna give it a shot.
the pack size is not much bigger than a medium sized thermos flask.

My Macpac "Microlight" comes in at over 2kg and I'm perfectly happy with it - but then it's pretty bombproof (as I like it to be).

I don't think that much 1.5 kg is bad. It's how you transport it!
Rucksack, bike luggage ,trailer and how each option changes the fun of the ride.

If it is really 1.5kg then it's only 0.4kg more than the 'real' weight of the Laser Competition (the benchmark). If it's 1.5kg for two people, it's quite light. It'll be fine and when the others in their tarps/bivvis are getting soaked and eaten by midges, you'll be zipped up snug and smug.

Jase..............bit of a run round.

starting in milnrow, heading up to rooley moor road, and heading up to slaidburn for the 1st night.
heading over the roman road to wray, and spending the 2nd night in arnside.
3rd night is ambleside, with some messing around in grizedale along the way.
then heading for a night in dent (brewery 8) taking in the other borrowdale along the way, and howgill lane.
next night is dufton, bit of lane work to get there, but nice all the same.
next night will be grinton, via tan hill and arkengarthdale or the old gang smelt works depending on the weather.
last night will be either kettlewell or malham.
should be good old trip to be honest.
planned it around a CAMRA guide, and it is 50/50 on and offroad.
i am having to do it on the electric bike, and should be able to cope with most of the offroad bits i reckon.

oh, and the tent is not for this tour, it is for next year when i get mended.(i hope).

If you're worried about 500g here and there a good shit before you head off for the weekend* will save you that.

* Facteious? No. Also as recommended by "How To Shit In The Woods"

Vango Apex? hmmm, I was thinking of one of these. We have many vango's at work and they have all impressed me....

having bivi'ed a lot I can safely say that a tent is the way forward for comfort, a tarp offers minimal protection from the weather, none from the midges and you need trees/rocks/ bike to give the tarp height.

If it's speed you are after then weight is king, but there is a reason why mountain marathon's and polaris insist on a tent rather than allowing bivi's

You can go lighter, but 1.5kg is fine.

How heavy do you think George Mallory's tent was?

I have just got a Vango Banshee 200 today & it is 2kg. Yer fine, once your rolling you will never notice it.
I will take the wee bit extra weight than fannying around with tarps, bags & trying to make on your Ray Mears 😯
BTW, really impressed with Vango tents, nice gear.

Thats the one I've had my eye on - for £60 you can't really go wrong, my only slight reservation is the pack size and the best place to carry it on the bike.
