I am, supposedly covered on my travel insurance for riding while away from home. I’m just a bit wary of how they’d judge whether the trails that we ride when away are “easy or moderate” as specified in the policy.
just for, belt and braces, piece of mind, does anyone have any recommendations re an annual bespoke cycling/MTB insurance for riding while on holiday etc?
I've used Dogtag for the past few years.
We use Yellow Jersey. Not had to use them yet but I know someone who has and said the service they received was first class
Plus 1 dogtag.
Just as a benchmark, approx how much should I be paying?
That will be the million dollar question...
Probably best to ask them for clarification, easy to moderate would be ones where it's impossible to fall off and hurt yourself?
https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/personalaccidentinsurance For a look, though what are you looking to be covered, is it a life insurance type question or are you looking for loss of earnings cover?
If you’ve got a standard travel policy that covers some mtb in the activities section don’t expect to be adequately covered for a full mtb holiday. Get something specific instead.
Dog Tag can be right arsey about what hospital you go to! If you go straight to the resort medical facilities (likely private) they’ve been known to decline the claim as you didn’t (in whatever state you’re in) stop to google the nearest municipal hospital and head there instead!
I’ve used Insure and Go up until now but I think that this is the last year that they’ll cover me. I’ve always paid a supplement to extend cover to “unmarked trails”. Whether it would actually have worked if I’d had to be recovered from 2000 metres up in the Taygetos range, who knows?
You say 'supposedly' covered in the UK, perhaps it's best to check?
Most travel policies only kick in if there is a pre-booked accommodation for two or more days so a bimble to the shops or a day trip may well not be covered.
I've always used Snowcard.
not sure if they're any good during a claim cos I've never claimed...
Cheers guys:
we travel a fair bit and I always ride for at least 1-3 days while we’re away (South Africa, Bali, many European trips, plus I’m going to Spain with Ciclomontana in a couple of weeks. I sometimes take part in races in the UK and might abroad one day (Ratrace crossing, Battle on the beach, just fun stuff, at 62 I’m hardly competitive)
i might be looking for something that doesn’t exist, but I just want specific cover, whereby, in the event I get hurt, treatment will be covered, and if I need getting home, that’s covered too.....IOM resident, so we don’t have EHIC card cover (reciprocal in UK, but not abroad)
Ah the curve ball coming from leftfield.....
IOM you would want to be looking a bit deeper on that one, most travel insurance will cover get me home, most will exclude racing at some levels. BC is a good look along with the more specialist. However you need to make sure any trip to the UK is covered in terms of get me home too - though how would this work out if you tripped and hit your head on the mainland now? Would you get treated on the NHS and taken home?
I never bothered with specific insurance other than for flights and bags coming back to visit the UK as the NHS would be on hand (not sure if that was wise or not)
There is a reciprocal agreement meant in place: IOM/UK. UK/IOM residents.
